Q & A on Lecture in Analysis of Landslide Dynamics

1) How to obtain the soil parameter of 2D-DMM model? let say friction angle and turbulence
coefficient. Is the back analysis only way to obtain soil parameter?

Recommendations for rheological models and model parameters are available in the relevant
GEO technical guidance notes, for example, TGN No. 29, 34 and 38 in
https://www.cedd.gov.hk/eng/publications/geo/geo-technical-guidance-notes/index.html

2) Apart from back analysis, let say we want to analyse landslide of a new hill side, how to
obtain a reliable soil parameter?

Recommendations in the GEO TGN are for assessment or design for mitigation works in a hillside
that may not necessary have records of existing landslides for back analyses.

3) How do estimate the landslide volume and input in model?

Recommended good practice or standard standards for assessment of design events for design
of mitigation works is given in GEO Report No. 138. Prof. Ken Ho will cover this in one of his
lecture.

4) How to model the barrier and baffle in 2D-DMM model? And how to obtain the energy
absorbed by the barrier? So that we would know which barrier is adaptable?

Recommendation for design of barriers are given in relevant GEO TGN, e.g. TGN No. 33, 35, 37,
45. 47, 48 and the relevant GEO Reports referred to. Prof. Ken Ho will cover this in one of his
lecture.
