Types of Mechanical Gauges and Uses

Mechanical gauges are tools which are used for measuring dimensions, pressure
levels. These devices come in two variants: mechanical and electromechanical.
Pressure measuring gauges can be either analogue or digital subject to
readouts.Depending on the way measurements are captured, dimensional
gauges can be classified into bore diameter gauges, depth or height gauges.

Types of mechanical gauges:

Rulers and scales: Rulers and scales are usually single steel plate type tools to
measure length and perimeter of objects.

Calipers: Calipers are of two types : inside and outside calipers. They are used
for measuring internal and external dimensions of an object. For comparing the

measured value, an external scale is attached to these calipers. Some caliper
models do come with a measuring scale.

Vernier Calipers: These precision tools are used to measure smaller distances
accurately. Vernier calipers have two distinct jaws to capture measurement
readings of inner and outer dimensions of an object.

Micrometers: Micrometers are more accurate than vernier calipers. They are fine
precision tools used for measuring smaller distances with accuracy.

Feeler gauges: Feeler gauges are used to measure the clearance between sur-
face and bearings.

Poker gauges: They are also known as propeller wear down and used in measur-
ing propeller shaft clearance.

Bore Gauges: Bore gauges are used to measure the size of any hole and come in
both digital and analogue variants.

American Wire Gauge: American Wire Gauges or AWGs are circular shaped tools
used to measure the cross-section of electrical wires and cables.

Depth Gauges:
These gauges are used to measure the depth of slots and holes. Depth gauges
are available in digital, analogue and scale variants.

Dial Gauges:
These gauges are used to measure flatness of surfaces and detecting minor de-
viations in linear measurements of objects. Dial gauges are also used to measure
the centricity of circular objects.
