Objective:
The objective of this SOP is to provide guidelines for the proper disposal of scrap materials generated
within the microbiology department to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and maintain
a safe working environment.
Scope:
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the disposal of scrap materials within the microbiology
department.
Responsibilities:
Laboratory Technician: Responsible for segregating and packaging scrap materials for disposal according
to this SOP.
Environmental Health and Safety Officer: Responsible for overseeing compliance with waste disposal
regulations and providing guidance on proper disposal methods.
Procedure:
Segregate scrap materials into categories (e.g., glassware, plasticware, contaminated materials) for
proper disposal handling.
Place broken glassware and other sharp objects in designated puncture-resistant containers to prevent
injuries during handling.
Decontaminate any laboratory equipment or surfaces that may have come into contact with hazardous
materials before disposal.
Label all containers with the appropriate waste codes and hazard labels as per regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with the facility's waste management provider or environmental services for the collection
and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
Maintain records of waste disposal activities, including the types and quantities of materials disposed of
and disposal methods used.
Conduct periodic audits of waste disposal practices to ensure compliance with SOPs and regulatory
requirements.
