Q1: Getting Fimiliar with Wood Working

1.1 : Write down the definition of 3D printer (Official from a reliable source)

3D printing, in manufacturing, any of several processes for fabricating three-

dimensional objects by layering two-dimensional cross sections sequentially, one on
top of another. In the case of 3D printing, the layering is repeated hundreds or
thousands of times until the entire object has been finished throughout its vertical
dimension.(Britannica.com)

Write down the definition of 3D printer in your own words(personal definition)

3D printing is a manufacturing technique that requires less resources to create an 3D

object with the use of 3D printer and helps to reduce the labour cost and the time
needed in making of the same object and also it is easy to use and be ran by an
individual person as well.

1.3: In your Own Words write a few sentences related with 3D printing about
following softwares for which you have recieved introduction in the current session:
TinkerCAD and Cura.

The Softwares such as TinkerCAD and Cura are used to prepare the design and
dimensions of the desired to be printed and can also be used to set the properties for
the printing of the product such as temperature etc..

1.4: If there is no restriction on the size of the product, which one product you
would like to prepare using a 3D printer. Explain in Detail why you would produce
that product

If there is no restriction on the size of the product, we would like to create a Iron Man
Mask. As Iron Man Mask is a fascinating thing to make and wear, And Also we can
Create the Details of the Mask Using AutoCAD.
Task 2: Manual 3D Printing Using Clay
2.1: Prepare the Following Products Using Clay:

Section - 1: Square base pyramid

Length of the dimension(a) is at least 50mm.

Minimum Number of Layers = 15,

Maximum Thickness of layer = 2mm.

2.2: Attach the Pictures of the Object created during this activity.
Task 3: Understanding of 3-D Printing Possibilities
3.1: Explain why you need to 3D print? Explain in detail about the advantages of
3D printing technology
3D printing is needed as it lets us to produce the product which we need at a time. It has various
Advantages Such as:
1. It requires less time and Labour
2. Customization and Personalization
3. Can Produce objects when required
4. It is cost effective
5. Reduces Waste Material

3.2: Write down the steps to 3D print your selected Design.

First We need to make a 3D model using software like TinkerCAD etc..
Then we need to Export the File in the .sldprt format
After that we need to Prepare a 3D model using Cura and adjust the settings such as Layer
Height and temperature etc..
Then we need to load the filament and Start the Print
Then After print, we have to remove the print and finally clean the leftover filament from the
printer.

3.3: Write down what is the time and temperature required to complete the 3D
print of that product
The Time required to 3D print depends on the size and complexity of the design and the printer.
3D Printing a SD card Slot takes upto an hour. And the temperature depends upon the filament
that is being used, for eg., PLA usually needs an extruder temperature of 190-220°C and a
heated bed temperature of 50-60°C.

3.4: Prepare a table of different variables associated with the 3D printing machine.

3.5: Write atleast 3 problems that can occur while you are working with a 3D
printing Machine. Write Possible Solutions for these problems.
Layer shifting or inappropriate printing because of the Loose Belt

Solution:- Layers are shifted or misaligned during printing. Regularly check the belt if it loosen
or not. If it is loosen then fit it properly. So the printing will be done properly.

Adhesion or Wrapping Problems

Solution:- Due to the lack of stickiness on the bed, the object may warp or move while printing.
To increase the stickiness, glue sticks or special bed adhesives can be used.

Clog in the Nozzle

Solution:- While printing if uneven layering or irrgular extrusion is observed the it might occur
because of a clog in the nozzle, then clean the nozzle using a cleaning filament.

3.6: List names and full forms of different materials available for using 3D printing
Machine. Moreover Provide a guideline when we use which material depending on
the end product.
Names (Full Forms) Details

Commonly used for prototypes,

PLA (Polylactic Acid) consumer goods, decorative items, etc.
Environment friendly, easy print.

Suitable for functional prototypes,

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) tooling, automotive components.
Durable and impact-resistant

Commonly used for mechanical parts,

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) enclosures, objects requiring flexibility
and strength.

Some of the disadvantages associated with a 3D printer are:

High Investment
Post Processing Requirements
Material Cost
Limited Material Options
Layer Resolution Limitation

The Major Disadvantage is The High Initial Cost which is much high for a individual to invest in a 3D
printer, due to which it restricts the adoption of the 3D printing much faster.
