INTRODUCTION
Media influence is the actual force exerted by a
media message, resulting in either a change or
reinforcement in audience or individual beliefs.
Whether a media message has an effect on any of
its audience members is contingent on many
factors, including audience demographics and
psychological characteristics. These effects can be
positive or negative, abrupt or gradual, short-term
or long-lasting. Not all effects result in change;
some media messages reinforce an existing belief.
Researchers examine an audience after media
exposure for changes in cognition, belief systems,
and attitudes, as well as emotional, physiological
and behavioral effects.

The influences of mass media media effects are

observed in various aspects of human life, from
voting behaviors to perceptions of violence from
evaluations of scientists to our understanding of
others' opinions. The overall influence of mass
media has changed drastically over the years, and
will continue to do so as the media itself develops.
In the new media environment, we have dual
identities consumers and creators. We not only
obtain information through new media, but also
disseminate information to wide audiences.

Further, the influence of the media on the

psychosocial development of children is profound.
Thus, it is important for physicians to discuss with
parents their child's exposure to media and to
provide guidance on appropriate age use of any
media, including television, radio, music, video
games and the Internet.
Education and awareness:
Distraction is one of the most negative
effects of social media on students and
education. While social media is a helpful
tool for learning and having fun, it can also
become addictive and have negative effects
on students mental health.
The biggest benefits of social media to
students is the unprecedented access to
information it provides. Back in the day,
students had to rely on textbooks and
lectures to learn new material. If you
needed to research a topic for a project,
you will have to trudge to the library and
spend hours flipping through books and
encyclopedias. But now, with just a few
clicks, we can access a wealth of knowledge
from all over the world.
Public awareness:
Social media gives its users the power to
build communities around a cause and
encourage supporters to take action. This is
done by sharing images, stories, and videos
to raise awareness and facilitate discussion.
News spreads quickly online and it can take
just minutes for a post to go viral.

The power of social media for raising

awareness was seen during the Black Lives
Matter protests and riots in 2020.
People organized and shared fundraisers to
support the families of victims of police
violence. Plus, freedom funds were shared
to help bail peaceful protestors out of jail.
Critical thinking of development:
critical thinking skills refer to our ability to
analyze and problem-solve. These skills
typically present themselves in the order of
identifying a problem, gathering the data
relevant to that problem, analyzing the
information we gathered, and making a
decision or coming to a solution.
social media may diminish the amount of
mental capacity we spend on any one given
problem or task. This is because frequent
use of social media tends to interfere with
daily interactions, forcing the user to try
and split attention between two or more
things at a time. This split attention leads to
less effective concentration on each given
thing, perhaps impacting critical thinking
skills negatively.
Technology solution:
technology has enabled the growth of
several alternate channels to do
business. It is visible in the way social
media has seen a growth spurt.
Mediums such as telecommunications,
instant messaging, social networking
sites, or the World Wide Web have
become an integral part of our lives.
Businesses can now interact with their
customers easily and portray the
products and services in a much better
and easier way with the help of
technology. It has led to the
expansion of social media.
Cellphones are not just for
making calls or sending text
messages.

REFLECTION
Social media has greatly impacted the way
we communicate and interact with each
other, and that same impact is evident in
the world of education. The integration of
social media into modern education creates
a unique dynamic that both teachers and
students have to navigate. On one hand, it
enables easy access to valuable resources
and encourages collaboration and
communication. On the other hand, it
carries with it some downsides of
information overload, distractions, and
cyberbullying. There is no perfect answer
for how exactly social media should be used
in education but it’s clear that thoughtful
consideration needs to be given so students
can reap the most benefit from its use.
