The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu – part 1

Dayang Sumbi was a beautiful and kind-hearted princess, but sometimes she was very lazy.

Her hobby was weaving cloth.

One day, her weaving tool fell.

Tumang, a male dog, come to bring her tool back to her.

As she had promised, she married him.

Tumang was actually a man who had been cursed by a witch to become a dog.

They had one son.

His name was Sangkuriang.

He did not know that Tumang was his father.

When he was twelve years old, Dayang Sumbi wanted to eat a deer’s heart.

Sangkuriang then went to the woods with Tumang.

After a couple of days hunting, they could not find a deer.

So, Sangkuriang killed Tumang and brought his heart home.

Dayang Sumbi knew it was not a deer’s heart, but Tumang’s.

She got very angry at Sangkuriang.

She hit him with a piece of wood on his forehand, and told him to go away.

Badly wounded, Sangkuring left the village.

The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu – part 2

Sangkuriang grew into a strong and handsome man.

One day, he went back to his village and met a beautiful woman.

He fell in love with her at the first sight.

He did not know that she was Dayang Sumbi.

She didn’t get older because she was granted eternal youth by the gods.

Sangkuriang proposed Dayang Sumbi.

Seeing a bad scar on his forehead, Dayang Sumbi soon realized that Sangkuriang was her own son.

She told him the truth again and again but Sangkuriang didn’t believe her.

Dayang Sumbi agreed to marry him with one condition, Sangkuriang had to make a lake and boat in
one night.

With the helped of some genies, by dawn both the lake and the boat were almost done.

Dayang Sumbi asked the villagers to burn the woods in the east.

The light made all the cocks crow.

The genies thought that the morning was almost broken.

They ran away, leaving the boat unfinished.

Knowing Dayang Sumbi cheated him, Sangkuriang got very angry.

He kicked the boat so hard that it went upside down.

It is now known as Mount Tangkuban Perahu, which is located in Bandung Regency.
