9. In a particular 12-hour period, the depth of water, y metres, at a point P , can
be modelled by the function y = A cos( B(t − C)) + D , where A , B , C and D
are positive constants, and the time t is given in hours, from midnight to noon.

It is given that the first high tide and the first low tide occur at 03:30 and 09:30
respectively. The depth of water lies between 4 m and 18 m throughout the
period.

(a) Write down an estimate of the value of t when

(i) the depth of the water is increasing most rapidly;

(ii) the depth of the water is decreasing most rapidly.
