ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

At the end of this lesson, the students should able to:

 Learn the meaning of the environmental pollution
 Classify the different sources of environmental pollution
 Know the biological capacity of the earth

Environmental pollution is increasing gradually and causing a

serious impact on living organisms including humans. It can be
reduced by microorganisms or plants that have biosynthetic
pathways for the degradation or accumulation of environmental
pollutants from soil and water.
A. Different Sources of Pollution
-Various forms of contamination introduced into the environment,
including air, water, soil, and noise pollution.
Examples:
Air Pollution: Emission of pollutants from vehicles, industrial
processes.
Water Pollution: Discharge of chemicals into rivers,
contamination from agricultural runoff.
Soil Pollution: Pesticide and fertilizer usage in agriculture.
Noise Pollution: Traffic noise, industrial machinery sounds.
B. Point Sources
- Specific, identifiable locations releasing pollutants into the
environment.
Examples:
- Industrial Smokestacks: Emitting pollutants directly into the air.
- Factory Effluent Outlets: Discharging untreated wastewater into
rivers.
C. Non-Point Sources
- Dispersed, diffuse origins of pollution, challenging to pinpoint
precisely.
Examples:
- Urban Runoff: Pollutants washed off streets during rain.
- Agricultural Runoff: Excess fertilizers and pesticides entering
water bodies.
D. Degradation of Commonly Shared Renewable Resources
- Deterioration of replenishable resources shared by communities
or nations.
Examples:
- Deforestation: Clearing forests faster than they can regrow.
- Overfishing: Depleting fish stocks beyond their ability to
recover.
E. Open Access Renewable Resources
- Resources lacking ownership or effective regulation, leading to
potential overuse.
Examples:
- Unregulated Fisheries: Overfishing due to a lack of ownership
control.
- Communal Grazing Lands: Overgrazing without clear
ownership and management.
F. Shared Resources
- Resources utilized by multiple users or nations, often leading to
conflicts.
Examples:
- International Water Bodies: Shared rivers leading to disputes
over usage.
- Global Atmosphere: Air pollution affecting multiple countries.
G. Biological Capacity
Earth's ability to regenerate renewable resources and absorb
waste.
Examples:
- Forest Regrowth: Natural regeneration of forests over time.
- Soil Self-Purification: Natural processes breaking down
pollutants in the soil.
H. Ecological Deficit
Occurs when human demand on nature exceeds the Earth's
regenerative capacity.
Examples:
- Depletion of Fish Stocks: Harvesting fish faster than they can
reproduce.
- Deforestation Outpacing Reforestation: Cutting down trees
without allowing for regrowth.
I. Global and Local Ecological Footprint
- Measure of humanity's impact on the environment, considering
resource consumption and waste production.
Examples:
- Global Ecological Footprint: Total carbon emissions exceeding
Earth's absorption capacity.
- Local Ecological Footprint: Water consumption surpassing the
local watershed's replenishment rate.
J. Environmental Impact Model (IPAT Equation)

- Mathematical equation (Impact = Population × Affluence ×

Technology) expressing the factors influencing environmental
impact.
Examples:
- Population Growth: More people contributing to increased
resource consumption.
- Advanced Technology: Higher technological development
leading to greater environmental impact.
K. Environmental Impact of Population Growth and
Ecological Footprint
- Examines how population growth influences the environment
and contributes to ecological footprints.
Examples:
- Population Growth Impact: Increased demand for resources,
energy, and space.
- Ecological Footprint of Overpopulated Areas: Areas with high
population density exceeding local resource capacities.
