Principles of MFL
Principles of MFL

Permanent magnets induces a uniform

magnetic field close to saturation in a good
section of plate.

The magnets induces a uniform magnetic field

close to saturation in a good section of plate.

7
Principles of MFL

On encountering corrosion a magnetic

leakage field develops.
This is due to the magnetic field being
forced outside of the plate.

8
Principles of MFL

This magnetic leakage field is then

detected by the Hall Effect sensors.

9
Principles of MFL

The Hall Effect Sensor

• The Hall Effect is the generation of an electronic
voltage created by a steady magnetic field flowing
perpendicular to the electronic current flow.
• Output voltage from the Hall Effect sensor varies in
response to a changing in a magnetic field.
• The greater the leakage field the greater the output
voltage.
• Sensors used in the Floormap VS2i have
temperature compensation circuits. Therefore the
size of each sensor is 15mm by 7.5mm.

10
Principles of MFL

Floormap VS2i Magnetic Bridge

• 300mm wide mounted on a roller carriage.
• Neodymium Iron Boron permanent magnets.
• DONOT loose magnetic force
• Generate a 1 ton pressure on a 6mm plate.
• Thicker the plate the stronger the magnetic pull

Permanent Magnets
Front

Rear
11
Principles of MFL

Floormap VS2i Sensor Head

• Sensor head located between the front and rear
permanent magnets
• Contains 36 sensors working as differential pairs
• Floormap VS2i only uses 16 pairs of sensors.
The outer pair at either side are not used.
• Output signal are processed within the electronics
• Staggered arrangement of sensors to avoid meeting
corrosion simultaneously.

12
Principles of MFL

Limitations of Floormap VS2i

• Unable to distinguish between corrosion originating
on the top surface or the bottom surface of the tank
floor.
• The MFL inspection should always be complimented
with a visual inspection.
• MFL is a volumetric technique so cannot be used to
detect cracks or laminations within the floor.
• Spurious or inaccurate readings can be caused by:
• Loose metal
• Welding or grinder marks
• Scale
• Distorted plate
• Incorrect speed
• Physical shock.
• Tank floor coating blistering / de-lamination

13
Tank Cleaning Requirements for MFL
Tank Cleaning Requirements for MFL

• Several factors relating to tank floor cleanliness can

affect the quality of MFL inspections and the accuracy of
MFL inspection results.

• Before commencing and inspection all product must be

drained and removed from the tank to reveal the floor
plates.

• Any sludge, standing water, scale and loose ferrite

material must be removed from the floor plates, typically
by sand / shot blasting or high pressure water jetting.

• Once the cleaning has been completed, any residual

dust, debris, blast media or standing water must be
removed before the start of the inspection

• The floor plates must be clean enough to conduct a

thorough visual inspection.
• Must be able to see the surface of the floor plate, not the
surface of a layer of contamination.

Threshold Set
• Only used when scanning in manual mode
• An illuminated LED numerical panel in the centre of
the control panel indicates the threshold level.
• Threshold values between 0 and 100 can be
displayed and values changed using the Threshold
Set buttons to the left of the display.
• As the threshold of the scanner increases then it
becomes less sensitive to detecting corrosion.
• The threshold value is found by calibrating the
scanner

Mode Range : Autostop
• ON will automatically stop the scanner, after running on
approx 140mm once any corrosion is detected by the
sensors. A mark can be placed on the tank floor for re-
inspection.
• OFF does not stop the scanner when corrosion is
detected. This can be an advantage over large areas of
corrosion
Floormap VS2i Scanner Components

Reset
• Only active when scanning in manual mode in Mode ON
• The centre of the switch will illuminate Red if any of the
LED display are lit.
• Once the switch is illuminated the motor control is
‘locked out’ preventing the unit from moving.
• The reset switch is a ‘Momentary’ switch, press and hold
the button down to continue scanning.
• The scanner must be pulled backwards 100mm
before continuing

Thickness Range
• There are 4 possible settings for thickness range.
• The correct Thickness Range must be set for the
corresponding plate and coating thickness to be inspected.
• This is determined from the Floor Scanner Setup Guide table in
the user manual, Section 1 Page 35 of VS2i Manual rev 2.4
Floormap VS2i Mechanical Setup
Floormap VS2i Mechanical Setup

Mechanical Setup

• The height of the magnet is fixed

• The speed of the motor is fixed

• The only operator variable mechanical

adjustment is the sensor head height.
Floormap VS2i Mechanical Setup

Sensor Head Height Adjustment

• Adjustment of the sensor head height is very simple
but it is very important that the sensor height is set
correctly for the operation of the scanner
• Sensor height must be set up in accordance with the
Floor Scanner Setup Guide table in the user manual
• Section 1 Page 35 of VS2i Manual rev 2.4
• Different operation modes have a different table
• The sensor height will vary depending upon the plate
thickness and coating thickness you wish to inspect.

Floormap VS2i Mechanical Setup

Sensor Head Height Adjustment

• To set the sensor head height the scanner must be
sat on a ferromagnetic plate.
• Shims (each 0.5mm thick) are placed between the
plate and the sensor head.
• Set the sensor height so that the shims just pass
under the sensor head.
• It is similar to using a feeler gauge when measuring
gap width
• Lock adjusting nut using the Locking nut

• Rotate Brass Nuts

• Clockwise – Raises sensor head height
• Anti-clockwise – Lowers sensor head height
Floormap VS2i Mechanical Setup

Setting the Sensor Height

• Place the scanner onto a metal surface
• Raise Sensor head
• Turn both the adjusting nuts clockwise until the sensor
head it at its maximum height, or enough to slide the
shims under.
• Depending upon the sensor height, place the desired
number of shims between the sensor and the metal
surface.
• Lower the sensor head
• Turn both adjusting nut anticlockwise until the sensor
head just rests on the shims.
• If the sensor head is resting on the shims the
adjusting nut will start to unwind up the drop arm
thread.
• Turn both adjusting nut clockwise until the sensor head
starts to lift off the shims.
• Set the sensor height so that the shims just pass
under the sensor head.
Floormap VS2i Mechanical Setup

Setting the Sensor Height

• The sensor head height should be level
• Have equal friction between the sensor head and
shims when checking either edge
• Lock the adjusting nut using the locking nut.
• Hold the adjusting nut and screw the locking nut down
so that the two nuts lock each other.
• Ensure the sensor height has not altered after locking

• Check that the sensor still can float freely by having

the springy feel.
• Any dents in the centre of the sensor head can cause
a problem when setting the height because the centre
of the scanner might be 1mm lower than either edges.
• To overcome this check the height under each drop arm
rather than the whole head.

Manual Mode
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation

Manual Mode Operation

• The system is used as a conventional floor scanner
without using the on-board computer.
• The system can be switched to this mode at any time
if required.
• Normally used for plate thicknesses in excess of 12 mm
• Obstructions prevent a comprehensive ‘Floormap’
report.
• The scanner is used to detect corrosion above a
defined percentage loss level
• This minimum level of corrosion detection must also
be ascertained before calibrating.
• Calibration of the scanner at the minimum corrosion
percentage loss is required before inspection
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation

Calibration
• An accurate thickness of the tank floor and any
coatings must be known prior to calibration.
• All calibration procedures should be carried out on a
plate of the same thickness as the floor plates to be
tested.
• The standard Floormap MFL reference plates are
6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm thick.
• It is acceptable to use a standard reference plate
providing
• The plate used is within 1mm of the floor plate thickness
• The plate is not thinner than the floor plate.
• If the calibration procedure is carried out on a MFL
reference plate that is thicker than the floor plate to be
tested, then the system will be slightly over sensitive
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation

Calibration
• If a coating in excess of 1mm on the tank floor, then it
must be simulated during calibration
• Placing a piece of non magnetic material the same
thickness of the coating between the calibration plate
and the scanner.
• The signal from natural corrosion pitting is stronger
than from the artificial defects in the calibration plate.
• It is common that the system will be slightly more
sensitive in one direction than the other, on the
calibration plate.
• It is important to calibrate the scanner in a similar
temperature range that the tank will be inspection at.
• The calibration plate must not be in contact with any
other ferromagnetic material while the calibration is
being carried out.
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation

Calibration
• Calibration must be performed out of the tank
• If there is no alternative then an raise the calibration
plate away from the tank floor by at least 150mm
(6 inches) to creating an air gap between the floor and
calibration plate.
• Never leave the scanner on the calibration plate when
not being used.
• A residual magnetic field can be left in the plate which
can prevent accurate calibration.
• When calibrating always run the scanner across the
whole plate, then turn though 180o and scan back the
opposite direction
• To avoid any residual magnetic field in the plate and
prevent an accurate calibration of the system the
artificial defects in the calibration plate.
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation

Calibration in Manual Mode

• The scanner must be turned on and left for a period of
10 minutes before use.
• Allows the sensors to settle at the ambient temperature.
• Ensure correct thickness range is selected and
correct sensor height is set.
• The scanner can be calibrated in either auto stop
mode, but its recommended that auto stop be ‘OFF’
• Auto stop ON: Once stopped the scanner MUST be
pulled back 100mm before continuing.
• Auto stop OFF: The LED array must be watch to count
the number of flashes.
• Always begin at a low threshold value and increase
the threshold value.
• Scan across calibration and check if the scanner
detects the required percentage loss.
• Turn scanner 180o, increase the threshold value and
scan in opposite direction
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation

Calibration in Manual Mode

• Once the scanner no longer detects the required
percentage loss, use the same threshold value and
scan in the opposite direction.
• The scanner is calibrated once a threshold value is
found where the required percentage loss is no longer
detected in both directions.
• Any corrosion levels below the known percentage
loss will no longer be detected however corrosion
levels above will.
• The threshold value for each percentage loss should
be similar.
• It is not always possible to calibrate for every
percentage loss in every plate.
• The threshold vales will be different for each plate
thickness and percentage loss.

Inspection in Manual Mode

• Inspection can follow the designated plate numbering
system.
• It is advisable to leave Auto stop in ON.
• The scanner will stop when it finds any indications
above the percentage level.
• Auto stop OFF is useful for sizing large areas of
corrosion
• During an inspection every time the scanner stops the
area must be marked on the floor and inspected to
accurately determined the depth of the corrosion.
• Before continuing to inspect the scanner must be pulled
back 100mm.
• Any corrosion detected must be then accurately
measured from the reference point.
• Reporting carried out purely inspecting in manual
mode will follow a UT based report.

Mapping Mode
• Before operating the FloormapVS2i in mapping mode
the following fundamentals and definitions that should
be understood.
• For the software to map the tank floor correctly.
• Software must know where the scanner is on the plate
• Software must know which plate the scanner is inspecting
• This is achieved by providing the software with
information regarding
• Tank Datum
• Plate Numbering System
• Plate Reference
• Plate Orientation
• Plate Size
• Scanning Mode
Floormap VS2i Floormap Mode Operation

Tank Datum
• This is an Imaginary Point which exists outside the
tank

• Referenced from the tank datum are:

• The plate numbering system
• The plate reference
• The plate orientation

• To position tank datum

• Look at the tank floor from above
• Align the plate row so they run parallel.
• Look perpendicular to the plate rows
• The tank datum point is located in the bottom left hand
corner of the tank. [Over the Left Hand shoulder]

• Mark on the tank wall the location of this point.

Resuming Tracks
• Tanks will always have some kind of obstructions that
can cause problems when inspecting plates.

• They can vary from:

• Isolated obstructions blocking one or two tracks on a
plate – such as a roof support plate
to
• Pipe work or heating coils running across the plate and
neighbouring plates

• The data acquisition software can be used very

efficient to scans plates with obstructions.

• Software must know an offset measurement

• It is measured between the point where scanner
stopped to point where the scanner will resume
Floormap VS2i Floormap Mode Operation

Resuming Tracks
• Two ways to resuming tracks using the software:
• During the scan of a track

• Returning to a track after continuing other track

• Resume with an offset measurement
• Resume from other edge of plate

Calibration
• The FloormapVS2i should only be calibrated using
MFL Reference plates manufactured to the current
Silverwing specification

• The calibration procedure should be carried out on a

MFL reference plate the same thickness as the floor
plates to be inspected.

• It is acceptable to use a standard MFL reference plate

providing that the plate used is within 1mm of the floor
plate thickness but not thinner than it
• When calibrating on a reference plate that is thicker
than the floor plate the system will be slightly over
sensitive so it may be necessary to adjust the results

• The FloormapVS2i system must be turned on and left

for a period of 10 minutes before calibration
