Tank Cleaning Requirements for MFL
Tank Cleaning Requirements for MFL
Summarise
• The aim of the cleaning process is to remove
any contaminants such as product residue,
scale and loose ferrous material from the
surface of the tank floor.
Manual mode
• The scanner detect corrosion above an operator
variable threshold. All indications found must be
correctly sized using UT.
Floormap mode
• The on-board computer is used to allow full data
acquisition from the signals detected by the Floormap.
• All indications captured by the computer are sized in real
time against a correlation curve created from a
calibration plate.
• The reporting software generates a colour coded map of
the tank floor showing the location and severity of all
corrosion.
Floormap VS2i operating modes
Corrosion Detection
• Manual mode: locates corrosion above a calibrated
percentage loss.
• To accurately size any located corrosion then further
inspection is required.
• Floormap mode: locates and accurately sizes
corrosion between 20% and 80%.
Battery Life
• Manual mode: Battery life is approx. 8 hrs
• Floormap mode: Battery life is approx. 3.5 hrs
Floormap VS2i operating modes
Reference Points
• Manual mode: No reference points are required to
begin inspection.
• All corrosion areas found must be checked then
measured and located correctly.
• Floormap mode: Location of various reference points
are required before beginning inspection.
• Can be a time consuming process but the tank layout
and corrosion location is automatically generated.

Floormap VS2i Scanner Components
Batteries
• Battery sit within the battery tray, located behind the
motor.
• Motor cover protects the battery and motor.
• Never remove this cover whilst inspecting.
• Manual mode operation with a low battery
• Scanner becomes over sensitive
• Hot work permit will be required due to the battery.
Floormap VS2i Scanner Components
Battery Charging
• Only use charger provided with the scanner.
• The use of any other charger will invalidate the warranty
• Could result in battery explosion due to overheating
while charging.
• Charger supplied with the Floormap:
• Input supply range for charger is from 110v to 240v
• Self regulating so will not overcharge the battery
• Batteries are fully charged from flat in 6 hours.
• Always removed the battery before charging
• Connect the charger to battery as follows:
• RED lead connects to the battery positive terminal
• BLACK lead connects to the battery negative terminal

Encoder
• Used to measure distance travelled by the scanner
• Brass gear attached to the front roller axle
• Encoder is located on top of the magnetic bridge
• Positional accuracy to within 3mm on an 8 metre track
length.
• Once the scanner stops a mark must be made if you
wish to continue scanning along that track.
• Ensure the cable does not get caught in the gas strut.
Floormap VS2i Scanner Components
Gas Strut
• Located at the rear of the scanner between the back
of the magnetic bridge and the back of the mainframe
housing
• Provides two convenient features
• Ability to release scanners magnetic pull from the floor
• Ability to hand propel the scanner when the drive motor
is not required.
• NEVER use the gas strut to lift the scanner with or to
rest it on when entering a tank.
Floormap VS2i Scanner Components
Sensor Head
• The sensor head is located in the centre of the
Magnet Bridge.
• Sprung mounted to ride any welds
• Adjustable sensor height
• Sealed unit but not fully waterproof
• After completing an inspection the sensor head
should be remove for cleaning and inspection.
• Once replaced the scanner
will need recalibration
• If the height of the sensor head
has changed during inspection
then a recalibration is required.

Mechanical Setup
Calibration
• An accurate thickness of the tank floor and any
coatings must be known prior to calibration.
• All calibration procedures should be carried out on a
plate of the same thickness as the floor plates to be
tested.
• The standard Floormap MFL reference plates are
6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm thick.
• It is acceptable to use a standard reference plate
providing
• The plate used is within 1mm of the floor plate thickness
• The plate is not thinner than the floor plate.
• If the calibration procedure is carried out on a MFL
reference plate that is thicker than the floor plate to be
tested, then the system will be slightly over sensitive
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation
Calibration
• If a coating in excess of 1mm on the tank floor, then it
must be simulated during calibration
• Placing a piece of non magnetic material the same
thickness of the coating between the calibration plate
and the scanner.
• The signal from natural corrosion pitting is stronger
than from the artificial defects in the calibration plate.
• It is common that the system will be slightly more
sensitive in one direction than the other, on the
calibration plate.
• It is important to calibrate the scanner in a similar
temperature range that the tank will be inspection at.
• The calibration plate must not be in contact with any
other ferromagnetic material while the calibration is
being carried out.
Floormap VS2i Manual Mode Operation
Calibration
• Calibration must be performed out of the tank
• If there is no alternative then an raise the calibration
plate away from the tank floor by at least 150mm
(6 inches) to creating an air gap between the floor and
calibration plate.
• Never leave the scanner on the calibration plate when
not being used.
• A residual magnetic field can be left in the plate which
can prevent accurate calibration.
• When calibrating always run the scanner across the
whole plate, then turn though 180o and scan back the
opposite direction
• To avoid any residual magnetic field in the plate and
prevent an accurate calibration of the system the
artificial defects in the calibration plate.

Mapping Mode
• Before operating the FloormapVS2i in mapping mode
the following fundamentals and definitions that should
be understood.
• For the software to map the tank floor correctly.
• Software must know where the scanner is on the plate
• Software must know which plate the scanner is inspecting
• This is achieved by providing the software with
information regarding
• Tank Datum
• Plate Numbering System
• Plate Reference
• Plate Orientation
• Plate Size
• Scanning Mode
Floormap VS2i Floormap Mode Operation
Tank Datum

Plate Reference
• Refers to the corner of the plate where scanning is
commenced
• Scanning can commence from any 90o corner of a
plate.
• For the software to operate the plate must have at least
one 900 corner
• Plate Reference is identified relative to Tank Datum
• Care must be taken in identifying the Plate Reference
when looking towards the Tank Datum.
• It is easy to become disorientated
• If possible position plate reference to the bottom left
hand corner of the plate
• Tank Datum and Plate reference are then in the same
corner.
• In order to position the defect location correctly it is
necessary to identify the Plate Reference

• Additional information must be understood before
operating the scanner in Floormap mode
• Active Scan Width

Floormap VS2i Floormap Mode Operation
Mechanical Constraints
• The total width of the magnet carriage is 300mm.
• Unable to get closer than 30 / 40 mm to the lap weld.
• An overlap of the non-active mechanical area is
required to ensure complete coverage
Floormap VS2i Floormap Mode Operation
Mechanical Constraints
• There is a mechanical start offset of 140mm, from the
back of the rollers to the sensor head.
