Forestry

The Tropical Rainforest

Emergent layer

- uppermost layer of the

rainforest
- trees that are able to
grow to these heights
often have small, waxy
leaves & have light weight
seeds
-Animals living in this
layer are winged
creatures, such as hawks,
bats and Philippine eagle
Canopy layer

- Deep, lush layer of

vegetation
- Leaves of the trees
block most of the
sunlight, wind, and
rain
- Dark and humid
environment
Canopy layer
- Most of the animals in
the rainforest thrive in
this layer because of
the abundance of food
from the thick
vegetation.
- Many of the plants in
this layer pollinate by
relying on animals that
spread their seeds as
these consumers
gobble up on their
fruits.
Understory layer

- Less dark and less

humid than the forest
floor
- Populated by short
palms and
philodendrons that
have large and wide
leaves
- Plants: Heliconia and
orchids
- Animals: monkeys,
apes, snakes, tigers
Understory layer

- The critically
endangered,
herbivorous gorillas
are considered
keystone species as
their droppings
spread the seeds of
the plants in the
understory.
Forest floor

- Dampest and darkest

part of the forest
- Decomposers: snails,
scorpions, worms,
fungi, & other
microorganisms
- Smaller predators:
wild pigs and
anteaters
- Larger predators:
leopards and tigers
Importance
of Forests
to Humans
- Timber
Causes harvest
of - Grazing
Deforestation - Palm oil
plantation
- Greenhouse
effect
Effects - Habitat loss &
of extinction
Deforestation
- Soil erosion
- Decrease in
water quality
Forest Reconstruction

Make a digital slogan about:

How can we better protect our forests and
the biodiversity living in them?
The Bilar Man-made Forest is a ten-
hectare mahogany forest that was
planted as part of a
local reforestation project that
started in 1947. It is considered a
biologically dead zone due to the
lethal chemicals released to the soil
by this tree's rotting leaves. As it is
not a native species, insects,
birds, and other organisms have no
interaction with the mahogany trees.
Forestry Law or Presidential Decree No.705

The law prosecutes the following violations:

a. Cutting and gathering wood products
without license
b. Illegal occupation and destruction of forests
or national parks
c. Destruction of wildlife resources
