Islamabad, Pakistan, Oct 6th, 2007 (BosNewsLife): According to the unofficial results
emerged so far General Pervaiz Musharraf has won a landslide victory in a controversial
presidential election on Saturday here at Islamabad, Pakistan but the Supreme Court may
yet snatch another five years term from him.
General Pervaiz Musharraf trampled token rivals in a vote by national and provincial
parliaments that was mostly boycotted by the opposition. But the embattled General must
now await a decision by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which said Friday that the
winner can not be officially announced until at least Oct 17 th, While it hear legal
challenges.
In the Punjab provincial assembly General bagged 253 and Justice (Rtd) Wajih-ud-Din
Ahmad three, while one vote rejected.
In the provincial assembly of Sindh General Pervaiz Musharraf got 102 out of the total
104 cast votes. While Justice Wajih-ud-Din Ahmad got the remaining two votes.
In the North West Frontier Province Musharraf bagged 31 votes, Justice Wajih-ud-Din
Ahmad got only one vote. Where as two votes were rejected.
Chief election commissioner was the Returning Officer for the presidential polls. High
court Chief Justices were Presiding Officers at their respective provincial assemblies.
In the National assembly 199 members used their right to vote, in Senate 57 members, in
Punjab assembly 257, Sindh assembly 104. While 34 Frontier assembly members and 33
Balochistan assembly members cast their votes.
Shahid Jameel the former State Minister who is under detention for the murdering of Ms
Qafeila Siddique was summoned by the National Assembly Speaker and caste his vote.
Opposition parties who made up almost 30% of the college had resigned prior to the
polls. While Ms Bhutto’s PPP abstained after she signed a reconciliation deal with the
General Pervaiz Musharraf.
Polling started at 10:00 am and ended at 3:00pm in which transparent ballot boxes were
used. Senator Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi cast the first vote of the day at the Parliament house
Islamabad .
The US meanwhile gave a cautious response to the results. “We are waiting for the
declaration from the apex Pakistani court. We will not have a comment until that the
declaration is made”, a state department spokesmen said.
