ABSTRACT

Customers satisfaction in school canteen services is essential for

school canteen sustainability because it benefits not just the students but

also the canteen and staff. It has become one of the issue in the school

of Maximo Estrella due to a lack of canteen facility for Senior High

students and lack of services in about the customer satisfaction among

the students in terms of cost, food quality, sanitation and services.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the customers

satisfaction among grade 12 students in Maximo Estrella Senior High

School. Using a descriptive research design, results indicate that male

and female respondents have neutral satisfaction and low variability on

canteen services. ABM, GAS, HUMSS, and STEM strands have neutral

satisfaction, but ABM strand has high customer satisfaction and low

variability. The findings also indicate that students have a moderate

satisfaction in canteen services, including cleanliness, cost, food quality

and service.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes

the background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the

study and scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the Study

Previous studies indicated that the degree of satisfaction with the

university cafeteria depends mostly on sanitation, physical condition and attitude

of the staff. The satisfaction level of the Senior High School students on the food

of the canteen in terms of price, serving size, nutritional value, taste,

presentation, variety and overall satisfaction (Natividad, 2019).

Many of the senior high school pupils at MaximoEstrella are having trouble

getting enough meals. Many students don’t have time to grab a snack because

the canteen closes at 5 o’clock after its operating hours.

Food poisoning is a global issue of public mental health. In Malaysia, the

Terengganu Ministry of Education School has linked food poisoning among

students to both non-modifiable factors like the location of the school district and

modifiable factors like food trucks and critical control points. In Terengganu,

1
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
incidences of food poisoning involving school children made up 63.6% of the

total. 81% occurred at secondary school and 57.1% involved schools located in

urban districts. Poultry (61.9%) was the most common food vehicle and

salmonella spp. 52.4% waste the most common microbial etiological agent.

Cross-contamination was less likely to be linked to school food poisoning

compared with inadequate cooking and reheating. Health education on food

safety, food handling, strict hygiene practice and clean canteen environment

need to be strengthened (Filza, 2021).

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the canteen’s services,

ascertain customers’ satisfaction levels with those services, and pinpoint any

issues that might have arisen. Findings revealed that 84% of consumers are

between the ages of 16 and 25, 50% have senior high school degrees, and 58%

only sometimes visit the canteen. Food and beverage consumers expressed

satisfaction with the taste, cost, and portion, but not with the cleanliness, variety,

or presentation of the products.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was between the

levels of service quality and student satisfaction in the MESHS canteen. The

following may benefit from the study's findings:

LGU Facilities: The information and results gathered from the study could provide

additional data, which can be used by the LGU to help the school canteen

improve their canteen and food services.

School: This research would help the school to identify the benefits of healthy

menu being served to the customers, the canteen management operation and

the school policy conducted.

Students: This research will be helpful for the students and can also serve as a

guide in terms of food awareness, cleanliness and preferences on food.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is to identify the demographic predictors of customer

satisfaction in school canteen services in Maximo Estrella Senior High

School. The study will last for more than a week in May during the second

semester. Personal data including gender and strand were taken into

consideration in the study.

5
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

A total of 156 pupils from Maximo Estrella Senior High School were

Incl uded in the study's restricted population of grade 12 students from 2022–

2023. Respondents were chosen from each academic strand, namely ABM,

GAS, HUMSS, and STEM, to ensure neutrality in sampling. To gauge people's

satisfaction with the school cafeteria service, a Likert-scale-style questionnaire

will be employed. It will be delivered via Google Form and paper and pencil to

those who cannot access it.

Definition of Terms

Cleanliness: Refers to the cleanliness of the canteen and utensils. The are

free meals for undernourished students, behavior of the staff and the rules and

regulations of the school canteen (Dhas, 2021).

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Any business, even a school canteen, needs to focus on achieving

customer happiness. Customer satisfaction in a school canteen relates to how

content and pleased the customers are with the canteen’s offerings in terms of

both food and service as well as their entire experience. The school canteen is

an essential part of any educational institution. It is a place where students can

take a break from their studies, socialize, and refuel with healthy and nutritious

food. The school canteen is an important part of any educational institution. It

provides students with a convenient source of food, promotes healthy eating

habits, acts as a social hub, and generates revenue for the school. As such, it is

essential that schools prioritize the development and maintenance of their

canteen facilities.

7
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Schools are an important food environment to cultivate and promote

healthy food choices and practices among children and adolescents. The aim of

the present study was to assess the type and quality of food and beverages sold

in school canteens in public primary and secondary schools in Kelantan,

Malaysia. Eligible schools were randomly selected from the list of all schools and

detailed information of all food and beverage items sold in the school canteens

were collected during school days. Food and beverages were classified based on

food groups derived from the Malaysian Food Dietary Guideline and the

Recommended Foods for Healthy Cafeteria Guideline (Hopkins, 2021)

The Sahid University canteen Is located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The

majority of its customers are between the ages of 16 and 25 (84%) and have a

senior high school diploma (50%) or above. The products’ quality in relation to

taste, cost, cleanliness, and portion. Variation and attributes of product display.

According to data on the quality of the items, 25% of customers are happy with

the food quality and drinks provided at the canteen, while the other 25 customer

are not satisfied with the cleanliness, variety, or presentation of the products.

Based on the study’s findings, a customer proposed emphasizing the canteen’s

cleanliness (Amelia, 2019).

8
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The overall volume of food waste produced during school lunches at the

University of Huddersfield, which is located in England. The study’s main goal is

to investigate how a number of variables, including meal satisfaction and general

levels of environmental awareness among students and staff, influence this

volume of waste. More than 3000 satisfaction surveys and 300 pairs of meal

photos were gathered during the lunch break in all three schools. In addition to

exploring the practices that contribute to food waste, students were given an

environmental awareness test that focused on their knowledge and attitudes

toward food waste. Staff members at the schools were also interviewed in order

to better understand the evolution of the schools’ eating practices and their

attitudes toward sustainability. The amount of food waste created in schools

cannot be adequately addressed by attempts to understand and change school

food systems using only behavioral interventions. As a result, it is concluded that

creating efficient routines in schools generally, and school canteens in particular,

is a crucial step in promoting a shift towards the sustainability of school lunch

service (Dhas, 2021).

In Mandaue City, Cebu, the Philippines, the Cebu Doctors’ University

Canteen served as the study’s site. The study’s focus was on the canteen’s

cleanliness and food quality. A total of 403 respondents—226 female and 177

9
male—participated in the study. The findings revealed that 183 of the
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

respondents were only moderately satisfied, 135 students were moderately

satisfied, 56 students were highly satisfied, and 29 students were less satisfied.

It is evident that a larger percentage of students are either very satisfied or

somewhat satisfied with the meal service provided by the KSEAN cafeteria. In

the study’s conclusion, it is further advised that academics and staff eat on

campus as well to encourage other students to follow suit (Cachila, 2016).

In Sta Teresita National High School, correlational method of research was

used to determine the relationship between the issues encountered in the school

canteen and the level of satisfaction with the services provided by the school

canteen on Grade 12 Students. Results revealed that students sometimes

observed the problems encountered by school canteens in the current state of

the area, attitude of the personnel, food preparation, prices of foods and

sufficiency of supplies. However, the level of satisfaction of the Grade 12

students in the services rendered by the school canteen somewhat observed the

foods being served, attitude of the sellers, physical condition and sanitation,

cleanliness and orderliness (Macaraig, 2019).

St. Mary’s College, Quezon City, Philippines Stratified random sampling

was used to determine the performed comprehend the researcher’s statistics in

10
this descriptive study, which involved distributing a self-administrator survey form
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

to 100 seniors at St. Mary’s College. That the level of happiness among senior

high school students with the canteen’s price, serving size, nutritional content,

taste, cleanliness, and overall contentment reflects. According to this canteen

study, students were generally satisfied with the quantity and caliber of the food

given as well as the meal’s flavor. 2% of the student survey respondents were

extremely disappointed with this canteen, 32% are unsatisfied, and 61% of

respondents are satisfied content, while 5% of the respondents are extremely

content. Since the majority of students are content with the flavor of the food

even if the price is high and the serving size in the canteen, the staff of the

cafeteria is advised to adjust the pricing of the food (Natividad, 2019).

Food and nutrition are essential factors for human development. Schools,

in particular, are required not only to feed the mind and soul but also the body

requisite towards holistic education. Therefore, school canteens play an

important role in the daily lives of students. However, issues on availability and

affordability arise with recurring socio-economic problems within the community

and family. In response, this study aims to assess the perception of selected

students toward the affordability of goods sold in the school canteens of General

Mariano Alvarez Technical High School (Valera, 2019)

11
MAXIMO ESTRELLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Although there has been a past researches about customer satisfaction in

school canteen service in Grade 12 students there is no study conducted about

senior high school students satisfaction to elementary school canteen.

Conclusions
MAXIMO
This study looked ESTRELLA
at the level SENIOR HIGH
of customer SCHOOL
satisfaction in terms of

cleanliness, cost, food quality and service.

Primary data were gathered by sending questions in Messenger to

answer via Google forms. We gathered our data to reach a goal of 156

respondents, and got a response through 156 respondents. The customer

satisfaction in school canteen service must be prioritized in order to achieve the

customers needs and maintain the satisfaction of the Grade 12 students. The

situation is currently being addressed.

This research study found out that there is still need to improve at Maximo

Estrella Senior High School canteen service. In this study we discovered that all

of the Grade 12 students at Maximo Estrella Senior High School are moderately

satisfied with school canteen service.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were

made:

20
Based on the fact that these Grade 12 students are moderately satisfied,

which is not aMAXIMO ESTRELLA

problem, the SENIOR
administrator who isHIGH SCHOOL
in charge should have a

suggestion box to improve the canteen. because, possibly, they are still slightly

unsatisfied with the services, resulting in unsatisfied students and a bad school

reputation. Additionally, the study recommends that the school should consider

introducing healthier food options in the canteen. This will not only improve the

overall satisfaction of the students but also promote healthy eating habits. The

school should also consider providing more seating arrangements in the canteen

to accommodate all students during peak hours. Furthermore, it is recommended

that the school administration should conduct regular surveys to monitor student

satisfaction levels and identify areas for improvement. This will ensure that any

issues are addressed promptly and effectively. Finally, it is suggested that the

school should explore partnerships with local businesses to provide additional

food options and enhance the overall dining experience for students. By

implementing these recommendations, the school can improve student

satisfaction levels and maintain a positive reputation in the community.

21
Finally, next researchers, this is a very important topic for us that

needs toMAXIMO

more in the future. HIGHthat
We hope SCHOOL
when you release

research on this topic, the results will improve and the Level of

Satisfaction of students will increase and make our environment healthier.
