United Nations as the decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Many experts term this decade in the light of climate change. According to them this decade for the long term survival of life in earth.
1.1 GOVERNMENT STEPS TO IMPROVE FOREST COVER
The state of Tamil Nadu in the past have taken efforts
in increasing the forest density in the recorded forest areas as well as the tree cover outside the forest cover. Due to the efforts taken in the past on forest and tree conservation, the state of Tamil Nadu could bring 23.70% of its geographical area under forest and tree cover.
The state of Tamil Nadu implemented the JICA
funded TAP on participatory mode from 1997-98 to 2012-13 under two phases. More than 175000 forest dependents and poorer sections were benefited by alternate employment generation. About 3900 SHGs were formed in all programme villages. This project has also provided micro-finance of about Rs.53 crore to help the forest dependents. 1.2 GREEN TAMILNADU MISSION
Chief minister MK Stalin launched the Green Tamil
Nadu Mission on September 24,2022 at Arignar Anna Zoological park in Vandalur. This aims at increasing the green cover in the state from 23.7% to 33% in the next ten years. at Arignar Anna Zoological park in Vandalur. According to our CM, “With involvement of various sectors, public and private participation, a massive tree planting programme will be undertaken to plant a variety of indigenous trees for the next 10 years.”
In order to get the process rolling, a total of 2.80
billion saplings had been collected from private charities and private nurseries. Tamil Nadu’s green movement plans to reach 12000 sq km in 10 years for only native species.
73 lakhs seedlings have been raised and handed over
to Department of Agriculture. 260 nurseries in 43 forest division throughout the state. State Green Committee & District Green Committee for protection & management of trees.
Community groups and NGOs are the early adopters
of tree planting in the state. They have come together with the mission for encouraging everyone to plant the trees. A generation of children with tree awareness is targeted under the mission. Every child will be encouraged to plant trees and care for it. The GTM nurseries are open for the schools and public so that they will be able to have a hands on experience in raising seedlings.
The government approved Rs 21 crore for producing
and planting 47 lakh plants this fiscal year and Rs 17.80 crore for 130 lakh seedlings next fiscal year. In addition, they have introduced electronic vehicles for forest workers, which will aid in increasing the forest cover. 1.3 SCOPE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE PROBLEM
Main objective of the scheme is improve the forest
cover. And also government tries to activate the participation of the public in maintaining the planting trees.
