Third Quarter – Group Activity

Name of sport: TABLE TENNIS Section: 9 - Helium

A. Introduction of the sport

The game table tennis is a sport invented in Victorian England in the early days of the 20th century
and was originally called Ping-Pong. It has been suggested that makeshift versions of the game were
developed by British military officers in India around the 1860s or 1870s. The name table tennis was
adopted in 1921-22 when the old Ping-Pong Association formed in 1902 was revived.

How is it played?
- To play, start by choosing a player to serve first. On a player’s serve they toss the ping-pong
ball straight up in the air and hit it over the net onto the opponent’s side. The ball should
bounce once on the opponent’s side of the table. A point is won by you if your opponent is
unable to return the ball on your side or if they hit the ball before it bounces on the other side
of the table.

B. Basic Skills

● The Grip: Hold the racket loosely with the web between your thumb and index finger,
touching the curve of the blade. Your index should rest along the edge of the backhand side of
your thumb against the bottom edge of the forehand side.

● The Serve: To serve, toss the ping-pong ball and hit it with the racket in no more than 30
degrees to the opponent’s side.

● Footwork: Your stance should be a slightly bent knees with the left feet forward. Your left foot
moves followed by the movement of your right foot under the table. After playing your stroke,
your right foot then moves back outwards and your left foot returns back to base position.

● Blocking & Counter-Driving: blocking is when you absorb and return an opponent's shot and
counter-driving is the return of topspin with another topspin. This does not only return
aggressive shots but also transition seamlessly from defense to offense.

● The Spin: There are 3 types of spin: Topspin, Backspin, Side Spin in which it practices the angle
of the paddle and the point of contact.
