02 Feminist Perspective

Feminism emphasizes the importance of the

social, political and economic structures that
shape human societies and stresses that gender
must be considered when examining the effects of
oppression and domination and power and
SWHB5 powerlessness in our society. (DeBeauvoir, 1957)

03 People-Centered Development Perspective

calls for the establishment of self-supporting

social and economic systems, key elements of a
sustainable society.

calls on external development partners to

SWHB5
support objectives chosen by the people,
building communities' capacity to manage
resources and meet local needs independently.
Perspectives in Social Development
03 People-Centered Development Perspective

an approach to international development that

focuses on improving local communities‘
self-reliance, social justice, and participatory
decision-making.

SWHB5 recognizes that economic growth does not

inherently contribute to human development
and calls for changes in social, political, and
environmental values and practices.
Perspectives in Social Development
04 Participatory Development Perspective

states that stimulating productive energies of

people, encouraging broader participation of all
people in productive processes, and a more
equitable sharing of their benefits, must
become more central elements in
development strategies.
SWHB5

seeks to engage local populations in

development projects.

04 Participatory Development Perspective

There are two perspectives that can define

participatory development:

1. Social Movement Perspective – defines

participation as the mobilization of people to
eliminate unjust hierarchies of knowledge, power,
SWHB5
and economic distribution. This perspective
identifies the goal of participation as an
empowering process for people to handle
challenges and influence the direction of their own
lives.

04 Participatory Development Perspective

There are two perspectives that can define

participatory development:

2. Institutional Perspective - defines participation

as the reach and inclusion of inputs by relevant
groups in the design and implementation of a
SWHB5
development project. It uses the inputs and
opinions of relevant groups, or stakeholders in a
community, as a tool to achieve a pre-established
goal defined by someone external to the
community involved.

05 Anti-Oppressive Perspective

an interdisciplinary approach primarily rooted within the

practice of social work that focuses on ending socio-
economic oppression.

It requires the practitioner to critically examine the

power imbalance inherent in an organizational structure
with regards to the larger sociocultural and political
SWHB5 context in order to develop strategies for creating an
egalitarian environment free from oppression, racism, and
other forms of discrimination in the larger society, by
engaging at the legal and political level.

05 Anti-Oppressive Perspective

In general community practice, it is about responding to

oppression by dominant groups and individuals.

In social services, it regulates any possible oppressive

practices and helps in delivering welfare services in an
inclusive manner.

06 Vulnerable Life Situation Perspective

considers how practitioners can learn from

clients about the impact of different
vulnerabilities and strengths.

Social vulnerability refers to the inability of

people, organizations, and societies to
SWHB5 withstand adverse impacts from multiple
stressors to which they are exposed.
