This time is to be spent in reading the Question Paper.
The time given at the head of this Paper is the time allowed for writing the

length of this string should be used to produce a note of 512 Hz for the same
intensity of strum? [2]

(vii) State Lenz law. On what concept it is based on? [2]

(i) (a) Which has more power: a thick lens or a thin lens? [2]
(b) Give any two characteristics of a virtual image formed by a convex
lens.

(ii) (a) How is the current rating of a fuse wire related to its thickness? [2]
(b) How is the fuse wire connected in the circuit and to which wire is it
connected to?

(iii) A magnet is suspended from a spring as shown in the diagram. When it


oscillates, the magnet moves in and out of the coil. The coil is connected to a
galvanometer G. Then, as the magnet oscillates -
(Consider the loss of energy due to various factors.) [2]
(a) What will you observe in the galvanometer?
(b) How will the deflection get affected after some time?

(iv) (a) “For a pure substance, the melting point and freezing point are identical”.
Justify. [2]

(i) A uniform meter rule of weight 2.0 N is pivoted at the 60 cm mark.
A 4.0 N load is suspended from one end, causing the rule to rotate
about the pivot. [3]
(a) At the instant when the rule is horizontal, what is the resultant moment
about the pivot?
(b) What will happen if we add a mass of 0.5 kg at the 60 cm mark?
(ii) (a) Calculate the power developed by a body performing a uniform
circular motion of speed 12 m/s and radius 1 m. [3]
(c) What amount of force is required (in kN) to generate a power of 5 H.P.
that maintains a velocity of 373 m/s?
(iii) A pulley system with V.R. of 4 is used to lift a load of 150 kgf through

(i) Displacement distance graph of two sound waves A and B, travelling in


a medium, are as shown in the diagram below. Study the two sound

(i) Five resistors, each of 3Ω are connected as shown in the figure – [3]

Calculate the resistance –


(a) between the points P and Q, and

(c) Name two factors on which the conductivity of a wire depends.

(ii) (a) State any two differences between radioactive decay and nuclear
fission. [3]
(b) Name the material/substance used in the nuclear power plant as –
(1) Moderator (2) Coolant
(c) Name the radiation which has the highest ionizing power.

(iii) (a) For the electric circuit shown below – [4]

(b) What is obtained from the inverse of slope of a current-voltage (I-V)

Question 9
(i) A calorimeter of mass 50 and specific heat capacity 0.42 J/g oC contains
some mass of water at 20°C. A metal piece of mass 20 g at 100°C is
dropped into the calorimeter. After stirring, the final temperature of the
mixture is found to be 22°C. Find the mass of water used in the
calorimeter. (Take specify heat capacity of the metal piece = 0.3 J/g oC,
specific heat capacity of water = 4.2J/g oC) [3]

(ii) (a) A central heating system has radiator pipes into which steam enters
at 100°C and water leaves at 100°C. Can this system succeed in heating
a room? If ‘yes’, please explain the reason for your answer.
(b) State the principle of mixtures. [3]

(iii) A step-up down transformer operated on a 2.5 kV line. It supplies a load


with 20 A. The ratio of the primary winding to the secondary is 10 :1. If the
transformer is 90% efficient, calculate – [4]
(a) the power output
(b) the voltage and
(c) the current in the secondary coil
(d) State any one loss commonly found in transformers and a measure to
prevent it.
