Biblical Worldview Integration:

The similarities between living things and their cells reveal the intelligence and
intentional design of our Creator. Genesis 1:20–25 illustrates God's deliberate
creation of a variety of life forms, each able to procreate similarly to itself. As
demonstrated in Psalm 139:14, the complex arrangements and operations that
make up cells attest to God's magnificent artistry. The interconnection of God's
creation is emphasized by the fact that life, despite its diversity, points to the
shared origin and interdependence of all living things. Since cells are the
fundamental units of life and enable the vital processes of growth, repair, and
reproduction, their presence in living organisms also emphasizes how detailed
God's handiwork is.

Cellular Transport: Diffusion,
Osmosis, and Active Transport

Learning Objectives:
● understand the processes of diffusion, osmosis and active transport by
which substances move into and out of cells
● understand how factors affect the rate of movement of substances into and
out of cells
● investigate diffusion in a non-living system (agar jelly)

Instructional Methods:
 Introduction (10 minutes):
 Begin by asking students if they have ever observed situations where substances
move in and out of cells.
 Share the lesson objectives and explain that the lesson will explore three
fundamental processes of cellular transport.

 Part 1: Diffusion and Osmosis (20 minutes):

 Define diffusion and osmosis, emphasizing that they are passive processes.
 Use diagrams and animations to illustrate how diffusion and osmosis work,
including the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
 Discuss real-life examples of diffusion and osmosis in cells, such as the exchange of
gases in the lungs and the movement of water in plant cells.

 Part 2: Active Transport (10 minutes):

 Explain active transport as a process that requires energy to move substances
against their concentration gradient.
 Provide examples of active transport in living organisms, such as the sodium-
potassium pump in animal cells and ion uptake in plant roots.

 Part 3: Factors Affecting Transport (10 minutes):

 Discuss the factors that influence the rate of diffusion and osmosis, including
concentration gradient, temperature, surface area, and membrane permeability.
 Explain how these factors can speed up or slow down the movement of substances
into and out of cells.

 Activity: Diffusion in Agar Jelly (15 minutes):

 Hand out agar jelly cubes to each student group.
 Instruct students to create a small well in the center of their agar jelly cube using
a straw.
 Add a drop of food coloring to the well.
 Place the agar jelly cubes in separate petri dishes and cover them with plastic
wrap.
 Start a timer or stopwatch and observe the diffusion of food coloring into the agar
jelly over time.
 Discuss the results as a class, emphasizing how factors like surface area,
temperature, and concentration affect the rate of diffusion.

 Conclusion (5 minutes):
 Summarize the key points of the lesson, highlighting the processes of diffusion,
osmosis, and active transport, as well as the factors influencing transport rates.
 Encourage students to think about the significance of cellular transport in living
organisms.

Evaluation of Learning:
 Assign questions or problems related to diffusion, osmosis, and active transport for
students to practice at home.

Meeting 18 (13th November - Sinai & Semester 1_

17th November - Bethel) Time allocated: 2 x 40”
Respiration: Aerobic and Anaerobic
Processes

Learning Objectives:
● describe the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
● understand how the process of respiration produces ATP in living
organisms
● know that ATP provides energy for cells
● know the word equation and balanced chemical symbol equation for aerobic
respiration
● know the word equations for anaerobic respiration

Instructional Methods:
 Introduction (10 minutes):
 Begin by asking students to recall their previous knowledge of respiration.
 Share the lesson objectives and explain that today's lesson will focus on the two
types of respiration and their respective processes.

 Part 1: Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Respiration (15 minutes):

 Use the whiteboard or projector to create a table comparing aerobic and anaerobic
respiration, including differences in oxygen requirement, end products, and
energy yield.
 Discuss the importance of oxygen in aerobic respiration and its absence in
anaerobic respiration.
 Highlight the types of organisms that typically use each form of respiration.

 Part 2: ATP Production in Respiration (15 minutes):

 Explain how respiration is the process by which cells produce ATP, the energy
currency of the cell.
 Use diagrams to illustrate the stages of respiration and emphasize how ATP is
generated during glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain.
 Discuss the role of NADH and FADH2 in carrying electrons to the electron
transport chain.

 Part 3: The Role of ATP (10 minutes):

 Describe ATP as the primary energy source for cellular activities.
 Discuss how cells use ATP for various functions, such as muscle contraction, active
transport, and biosynthesis.
 Provide examples of daily activities that require ATP.

 Part 4: Equations for Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration (20 minutes):

 Present the word equation for aerobic respiration: glucose + oxygen → carbon
dioxide + water + energy (ATP).
 Explain the balanced chemical symbol equation for aerobic respiration: C6H12O6 +
6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy (38 ATP).
 Present the word equations for two common types of anaerobic respiration:
 In animals: glucose → lactic acid + energy (2 ATP)
 In yeast and some bacteria: glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy (2 ATP)
 Discuss when and where anaerobic respiration occurs, emphasizing its lower
energy yield compared to aerobic respiration.

 Conclusion (5 minutes):
 Summarize the key points of the lesson, highlighting the differences between
aerobic and anaerobic respiration, ATP production, and the role of ATP in
cellular processes.
 Provide a brief overview of the next lesson or homework assignment.

Evaluation of Learning:
 Assign reading materials or online resources related to respiration, including the
importance of oxygen and ATP in living organisms.
