I attended the Art Geology: Landscape Impressions exhibition in the Martha Gault Art
Gallery located on campus. The art work was from students who go here at Slippery
Rock University and was a collaboration between the Art Geology department and the
Geography the Environment department. The students went to the Badlands National
Park in South Dakota. Dr. Patrick Burkhart has been taking students the Badlands
National Park for years and decided to bring along Dr. Katherine Mickle. 10 years

There were so many amazing pieces of art that stuck out for me but I decided on Bone
Appétit . Why? There is a lot of really cool things about this artwork that stuck out to
me. The first, and biggest attention getter, was the bones of the dead animals. As soon
as you walked into the room, at least for me anyways, that was one of the first pieces
that grabbed my attention. They are nicely put together so you can actually tell what
the animal was by just looking at the bones. The arrangement of the carcasses were
cool and weird at the same time. The top plate had 2 bird carcasses, the middle plate
had a small rat carcass, and then the third plate had a larger rat carcass. I am curious if
these animals are supposed to connect directly to something at the Badlands Nation
Park, or the artist figured they would make a different the usual piece of the land?
Either way, the art work turned out very nice. Another thing I really liked about the
piece were the plates that the animal carcasses were placed upon. They are ceramic
which gives them that fancy feel to them, they are arranged in different sizes to match
the size of the different animal carcasses, and their colors were different but seemed to
match very well with each other. Another fascinating part of the plates was the dirt or

programs feature instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension so that students can become capable readers and writers.
Phonemic Awareness Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate
individual sounds phonemes in spoken words, which can be a complex process for some

By learning alliteration, the students could create poems and tongue twisters that begin
with the same initial sound. Identification and the manipulation of phonemes must be
done successfully so that their poems and tongue twister are accurate. I could model
an example of alliteration by saying: Ms. Alder ate Aunt Annie s apples. In rhyming,
the students could hear that certain words have the same ending sound. I could model
this too by saying: Ba baa black sheep, have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, three bags
full. A clear understanding of alliteration and rhyming can also be taught through the
use of read aloud texts. If I taught younger students, I could create activities that
required them to substitute and or blend sounds. For example, I could say the word mat
and ask the students to substitute /m/ for /b/. They would then form the new word bat .
As for blends, I could have the students sound out specific phonemes such as /s/ /a/ /t/ to
create words such as sat .

Phonics is the set of relationships between phonology (the sounds in speech) and
orthography (the spelling pattern of written language (Tompkins, 2014, p.152). This is
the ability to know that each alphabet letter has a sound that correlates with it. Although
phonics and phonemics awareness differ, phonics puts the intervention at the level of
sounds, not letters, making sound concrete and
