Section 55 Formative Assessment #1

A A.1.1. Exercising your civic responsibility to vote: choosing the right leaders

1. The article lists three types of electoral candidates: leaders, public servant, and
servant-leaders. Which among the three would describe your ideal candidate in the
upcoming elections? Why?
→ In my opinion, we should choose a servant-leader. A true leader must not only have a
strong leadership aura on him, but the leader should learn to listen to the criticisms, and
opinions of other people especially the opinions of the normal citizens. A leader shouldn’t
entirely rely on the cabinet and other government officers but also to the non-governmental
organizations. Every opinion should matter and be validated especially if it could help our
country. Also, a leader-servant means that he’s not only working because of his own interest
or greed but because he/she wants to help our country and improve our situation for our
growth and development. A servant-leader always listen to any opinions either on his
government or public opinion as long as it can help for our country’s improvement. A
servant-leader is willing to protect his/her countrymen. Also, he doesn’t value self-interest
but either to help other people who needs it

2. Why do many legal-age Filipinos fail to exercise their right and responsibility to
vote?
→ I believe, the reason why many legal-age Filipinos fail to exercise their right and
responsibility to vote because they lack information about the candidates. They want to know
them more. They have to be meticulous in choosing who to vote. Besides, they shouldn’t just
choose randomly. They have to know the candidates. Also, they are a lot of people who are
undecided who to vote. They still have doubts about their intention that sometimes, they can’t
see their sincerity. Also, some people don’t have interest in voting at all. They don’t want to
involve in Politics knowing how complicated Politics is. Any politician can do whatever they
want in order to get what they want so they prefer to have a peaceful live.

3. Why is vote buying rampant in poor communities?

→ In my opinion, vote buying is rampant in poor communities because they can easily be
manipulated. It’s not that I’m looking down on them but most in the poor areas, they can’t easily
express their opinions and disagreement to the government. Add the fact that they lack
knowledge about our government because they don’t have free access to information. Then they
can believe anything the candidate would say even though it is just a trash promise from them.
To avoid vote buying especially on slum areas, they should also have access to information about
the running candidates. They have a right to know the candidates who would try to lead our
country.
