PRINCIPLES OF PLAY
Workshop Task

• In groups try to develop a set of principles of play for the T1 Rugby– both in attack
and defence.

PRINCIPLES OF ATTACK
• Gain Possession – get the ball

• Go Forward – by running/passing/kicking

• Score points – by tries or penalties

Some key additional principles


• Support the ball carrier (Support)
• Keep the ball alive (Continuity)
• Manipulate the opposition (Pressure)

PRINCIPLES OF DEFENCE
• Contest possession (try to win the ball)

• Move forwards (concede no space)

• Exert pressure on the opposition to turn over the ball (pressure)

• Win the ball back (regain possession)

• Counter-attack

PRACTICAL COACHING SESSION
Your Educator will now lead you through the following components of T1 Rugby:
• Kick-off
• Scrum(Attack / Defence)
• Line-out (Attack / Defence)
• Breakdown (Attack / Defence)
• Warm up
• Handling (Passing, Catching, Running)

You will all be asked to coach some of these areas – your Educator will give feedback
on both “What you coach” and “How you coach it” (Process)
