ENERGY MEDICINE
ENERGY MEDICINE
E nergy medicine has been around forever. The ancients were aware of the
psychological and physical effects we experience from invisible forces that come from
other people or from “out there” or simply from our own thoughts. Energy medicine
includes these psychological and spiritual realms, as well as the physical.
A lso called “the universal energy field,” this energy has been observed for
centuries. Called prana by the East Indians and chi by the ancient Chinese, new scientific
experiments will probably prove that the universal energy field is a layer between matter
and energy that interpenetrates matter and connects all objects to one another.
Energy medicine is a combination of this energy, which is the source of all life, and
medicine, which is a factor in treating disease. The current interest in energy- based
medicine is a response to our needs as a society, partly due to the failure of
our medical system to address the whole person. Energy medicine goes beyond the body
to factor in the psychological and spiritual dimensions. In energy medicine, energy is
medicine, and we use our own bodies, our energy and universal energy
to affect change.
MY STORY
H ere’s a little bit of my background and how I got involved in energy medicine. I
had a pretty abusive childhood, with lots of both sexual and emotional abuse; I talk about
that in my book, Truth Heals: What You Hide Can Hurt You.

When I hit puberty, I rebelled, and turned to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and pretty much
stopped eating. I was depressed, anxious, and bi-polar, but I looked good! Then when I was
25, I found out I had cancer.
My healing journey started with a 12-step program, eating right, and learning to meditate.
Meditation brought clarity, and my connection to spirit began to return. I added
acupuncture, massage and energy work and had a remission from the cancer!
W hat experiences have you had, what knowledge have you gained that will help
you in this field? Maybe your work has taught you how to be analytical. Maybe you’ve had
your heart broken or been through a serious illness and feel compassion for those who are
suffering. Maybe you too were abused as a child and your hyper-vigilance has led to
paranormal abilities.
Maybe you’ve studied yoga for years and know how to be flexible and in balance. Maybe
you’ve been a caregiver, a mother, and have learned about nurturance and opening
your heart. Maybe you’ve spent a lot of time outdoors and have the ability to expand your
awareness. What parts of your life, no matter how pleasant or painful, have helped you
build skills and knowledge that you can now use? Be sure to listen to my weekly radio
show. Get more information about days and times at DeborahKing.com/radio. You can
develop your intuitive abilities as you listen to people who call-in and share their
experiences.”
L earning to see energy is fun and really easy. When is the last time you got to go lie
outside on the grass and enjoy yourself? That’s the best way to begin: on a beautiful day go
outside and lie down on the grass. Now look up at the clear blue sky. If you’re in an area of
clear energy, like in the mountains far from the city, you’ll be able to see what looks like little
white lights that flash by, like the “shooting stars” you see when you’re dizzy after standing
up too fast. If you keep looking, pretty soon it will seem like the whole field of little white
lights is doing a rhythmic dance in the sun. Those little white specks of light—and feel free to
use your imagination if they aren’t obvious to you—are pranic energy.
If you’re in a congested area or a city, find a big tree with vibrant energy. Look softly a few
inches above the top of the tree against the background of blue sky. Can you see a sort of
wavy blue-greenish haze around the treetop? That haze is the tree’s aura or energy field.
I f it’s too snowy or cold or dark outside, look closely at a house plant. Can you see energy
flashing along the leaves? Put the plant in front of a dark background and shine a bright light
on it. You might be able to see blue-green lines going up the plant. Putting your hand, or a
crystal, up to the plant then pulling away will pull those lines toward you—that’s the plant’s
aura or energy field that you’re influencing. Again, just use your imagination if you don’t see
much of anything, and be sure not to dwell on it if you don’t. Remember, I didn’t see a darn
thing for years; it’s only one way to perceive, and not always the most valid one.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Take a moment and ask yourself: How has the belief in a split between the body and soul
that entered human consciousness thousands of years ago affected my life?
Most of us live every day with a subliminal belief that we have been “banished from the
garden". Take a moment and see if that subliminal message is in the back of your mind.
How can this thought affect your view of yourself—in your job, in your relationships, or in your
daily habits, like diet and exercise?
Are you still carrying in your cells those thousands of years of memory of a punishing and
vengeful God that says we are bad?
These are interesting questions; you may want to journal about them. Go here to access
