DOUBLE ACT

By Jacqueline Wilson

SUMMARY Double Act is a diary in which the story revolves around the life of identical twins named Ruby and Garnet Barker. Ruby and Garnet lived with their father and grandmother as their mother passed away when they were just 7 years old. They thought their life was amazing until Rose, their new stepmother, walked in into their lives and started changing everything around. Unavoidably, it was the beginning of what they called amazing life started to crumble and their super closed tight bond as twins began to fall apart. To start with, Ruby and Garnet were very proud of the fact that they were identical twins. They did everything together, wore identical clothes, wrote a diary together, talked in their own language, and even finished each other sentences. However, there was an unwritten rule between them that Ruby, the oldest by few minutes, was the one who took control. Garnet was like her tail since she did everything Ruby told her to. Although they were twins, they had opposite characteristics. Ruby was dominant, naughty, hyperactive, lively and stubborn, while Garnet was shy, obedient, clever, and considerate. Yet, they needed one another and felt great for just being together. Ruby and Garnets life was drastically changed when their father brought Rose, their new step mother into their almost perfect life. Rose started to change their life by changing their father usual fashion from plain to colorful one, sending their grandmother to a sheltered house, and even moving their house to a little book store in a village. Inevitably, they also had to go to a new school with new friends and new environments. Therefore, they showed their dislike toward Rose and her actions through rebellion and naughty stuff. Unexpectedly, their tight bond as twins was starting to fall apart. It all started when Ruby had a dream of being an artist and forced Garnet to join a twins audition for a role in a movie. Of course, they failed since Garnet was too nervous for being in the spotlight and not as lively as Ruby was. But being the stubborn Ruby, she found other thing to pursue. She sent a letter to the most prestigious boarding school for girls, Marnock Heights, asking if they could have a chance to be students of the school. After doing tests and interviews, the school gave Garnet, instead of Ruby, a scholarship to join the school. That was when Ruby began to act indifferent towards Garnets. Ruby cut her hair off and tried to be as opposite of Garnet as she could be. Fortunately, Ruby realized that everything had changed for the better and everyone had different path of life. Thats why she made friends with her former enemy, Blob. Moreover, she reconciled her arguments with Rose and apologized to Garnet. From then on, she promised Garnet to be her true sister and best friend though they would be facing different path of life.
