The Minangkabau house is the most striking, beautiful and distinctive in Indonesia.
The house itself is built on piles and has an oblong shape. The saddle backed roof is formed by a
load-bearing ridge-beam artistically. Each roof section ends in a graceful horn-like which sweeps
upward to a narrow point, sometimes twice as high as the center of the ridge.
The back part of the family house is divided into small rooms. These are separated from one
another by planks, bamboo or clothe and serve as sleeping quarter for the married and
marriageable girls. The fore room contains a large fire place and serves as a communal family
room. Often also slept in by children and unmarried.
The space beneath the floor of the dwelling lodges the domestic stock consisting of
buffaloes. Cows, chicken, and ducks.
Externally, the house is decorated with rectangular panels covered with floral motifs which
hide the abutments of the beams which are supporting the floor.
In general, the building is made of wood and bamboo. Various sorts of leaves are used for

Why is the world population so unevenly distributed?
Population distribution refers to the way in which people are spread out over a land area.
The world’s population is not evenly spread out. Why do you think this is so? There are two
main factors that influence population distribution:
a. The Physical condition of the place, and
b. The level of technology of the people. This refers to knowledge, skills and tools that the
people have.
People tend to settle in areas where the soil is fertile and tha climate not too harsh. That is
why river deltas, such as the Nile Delta in Egypt, are densely populated. There are fewer
people living in hily areas and areas with harsh climate because the extreme physical
conditions make living and farming very difficult.
However, it is posssible for people to survive under unfavourable living conditions. With
improvements in technology, places which were previously thought to be suitable for living
can become suitable for people. For example, an area with no water sources nearby can be
habitable by bringing in water from elsewhere. An extremely dry and hot area, such as
arizona, can be made more comfortable by having buildings fifted with air –condiotieners.
Farming may be difficult in a place with out fertile land and edadequte rainfall, but if the
people earn their living by other means and not agriculture, the place will still be
populated.
21. What does the text talk about?
A. The population distribution.
B. The physical condition of the place.
C. The level of technology of the people.
D. The distribution of the world’s population
E. The main factor of the population distribution.

JAKARTA, Wed. many people are closely following the political polls during the final
weeks these preceding this important general election. But how do these polls actually
work?
“polls are surveys of a relatively small number of people compare to the actual number
who will vote. They are to predict who may actually win an election before the final vote,
“said a politic observer, Muhammad Faishal.
Let’s say that 100 million people are expected to vote in the general election…100
people are asked for there opinions, each respondent represents a million voters
Faishalemphasized further,” It is obvious, the results of such a poll are not very reliable.
The more people surveyed, the more meaningful are the results.”
Pollsters have various ways of making their polls are more accurate. They try to find
representative of variety of people to questions. For example, they look for people with
similar background and for similar region to those of all the voters.
Pollsters also ask questions that try to find how many people who support each
candidate will actually vote. If a candidate has a higher percentage of enthusiastic
supporters than his opponent, he has a better chance of winning than the low number
might suggest. Pollsters may only count those who they consider to be “likely voters”.
If we look at the polls that are taken over time, we can after detect a trend. We can
tell if a candidate is gaining or losing support when we compare with the most recent
polls to the earlier ones.
Polls often ask potential (those who could be ) voters what they like or dislike about
each candidate. The campaigns use those result to help them decide which issue to stress
or which positions to clarify. They can also determined which voters to target with their
messages.
“Because no two people are the same, polls can never be perfect predictors of the
real votes. But they can give important clues as to where thinks may be headings. At the
very least, if you like politics, polls, can be great entertainment,”Faishal said (The news)

The yaks
A yaks is a wild ox of asia. It inhabits the cold, dry plateaus of Tibet, often more than
4.870 meters above the sea level.
Adult male yaks grow to an average height of two meters at the shoulder, and weight
about 1000 kg and the females weight a third of that.
A yak is covered with long and shaggy hair. It has a dense undercoat of soft, close matted
hair. Wild yaks can be brown or black, and both males and females have horns. Wild yaks
secrete a special sticky substance in their sweat that helps keep teir under hair matted. This
substance is also used in traditional Nepalase medicine.
The indigenous tribes of the Tibetan plateaus have domesticated the yaks for many years.
They rely heavily on them for transportation and ask pack animals because they are very strong
and able to manovers along dangerous ice and snow-covered land.
The domesticated yaks are also important to farmers as it is used to plough fields. Its
meat and milk are widely consumed. The soft hair is used to make clothes. Saddles, whips,
boots, and other articles are made from the hide. The bushy tail is used as fly chaser at
ceremonial processions in India.
