The Rabbit’s Revenge

boasting about his strength. And though they were such close neighbors, the lion looked down
upon the rabbit, and used to bully and frighten her. Finally, the rabbit could stand it no longer
and wanted to get her own back.
One day she went to the lion and said, “Good day, respected elder brother. Imagine it, I met an
animal over there who looked exactly like you, and he said to me, “Is there anyone in the world
who dares stand up to me? If there is, let him come and have a duel with me. If there is no one,
all of you have to submit to my rule and be my servants!”
“Oh, he was an intolerable braggart! It is so puffed up with pride that is eyes can’t even light on
anyone!” added the rabbit. “Oho,” the lion said. “Didn’t you mention me to him?”
“Yes, indeed,” the rabbit replied. “But it would have been better if I hadn’t. When I described
how strong you were, he just sneered and said dreadfully rude things. It even went so far as to
say that it wouldn’t take you for its attendant!”
The lion flew into a rage and roared, “where is it? Where is it?”
So the rabbit took the lion behind a hill and, not going too near herself, pointed to a deep well
from a distance and said, “It is down there, in there well.”

back at it angrily. The lion roared, and its enemy roared back. The lion became so furious that is

Why is the world population so unevenly distributed?
Population distribution refers to the way in which people are spread out over a land area.
The world’s population is not evenly spread out. Why do you think this is so? There are two
main factors that influence population distribution:
a. The Physical condition of the place, and
b. The level of technology of the people. This refers to knowledge, skills and tools that the
people have.
People tend to settle in areas where the soil is fertile and tha climate not too harsh. That is
why river deltas, such as the Nile Delta in Egypt, are densely populated. There are fewer
people living in hily areas and areas with harsh climate because the extreme physical
conditions make living and farming very difficult.
However, it is posssible for people to survive under unfavourable living conditions. With
improvements in technology, places which were previously thought to be suitable for living
can become suitable for people. For example, an area with no water sources nearby can be
habitable by bringing in water from elsewhere. An extremely dry and hot area, such as
arizona, can be made more comfortable by having buildings fifted with air –condiotieners.
Farming may be difficult in a place with out fertile land and edadequte rainfall, but if the
people earn their living by other means and not agriculture, the place will still be
populated.
21. What does the text talk about?
A. The population distribution.

JAKARTA, Wed. many people are closely following the political polls during the final
weeks these preceding this important general election. But how do these polls actually
work?
“polls are surveys of a relatively small number of people compare to the actual number
who will vote. They are to predict who may actually win an election before the final vote,
“said a politic observer, Muhammad Faishal.
Let’s say that 100 million people are expected to vote in the general election…100
people are asked for there opinions, each respondent represents a million voters
Faishalemphasized further,” It is obvious, the results of such a poll are not very reliable.
The more people surveyed, the more meaningful are the results.”
Pollsters have various ways of making their polls are more accurate. They try to find
representative of variety of people to questions. For example, they look for people with
similar background and for similar region to those of all the voters.
Pollsters also ask questions that try to find how many people who support each
candidate will actually vote. If a candidate has a higher percentage of enthusiastic
supporters than his opponent, he has a better chance of winning than the low number
might suggest. Pollsters may only count those who they consider to be “likely voters”.
If we look at the polls that are taken over time, we can after detect a trend. We can
tell if a candidate is gaining or losing support when we compare with the most recent
polls to the earlier ones.
Polls often ask potential (those who could be ) voters what they like or dislike about
each candidate. The campaigns use those result to help them decide which issue to stress
or which positions to clarify. They can also determined which voters to target with their
messages.
“Because no two people are the same, polls can never be perfect predictors of the

There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be given homework or not.
Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue that
children have hobbies that they want to do after school, such as sports or music. A further point
they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and doesn’t help the child learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and teachers
argue that it is important to find out whether children can work on their own without the support
from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down and think
about what they have learned in school.
Furthermore, they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done that needs
doing and it makes sense to send home tasks like independent reading or further writing tasks
that don’t need teacher’s support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should only given at
the weekend when children have more time.

One Desember night, a postman named E. Holboell was working late in

Copenhagen Post Office, sorting out great pile for Chrismast mail. As he moved around
among his mailbags, he happened to see two little beggars, a ragged little girl and boy
outside the window.
Thinking of the two children compassionately, he went back to the stacks letters
and parcels. Suddenly, he had an idea. He thought how if every letter of parcel carried an
extra stamp, and the money from thousand of such stamps went to help unfortunate
children. What a blessing it would be? Being a postman , he realized that it would not
cost anyone very much.
He expressed his idea to other people in the post office. Then they agreed to
launch the campaign to help unlucky children. They designed and printed the seals. So
the seal went on sell the following year and the campaign was even more successful than
the postman had hoped. The Danes bought for million of the stickers. At the time, when
drivers for funds were almost unheard of, this was triumph.
With funds from the first Christmas seal Campaign, they started to build two
