* Using of Electric Iron :
- An Electric Iron ( clothes iron ) is a small appliance that , when
it’s heated , it’s used to press clothes to remove wrinkles and
unwanted creases .

- Use an iron to remove stubborn

stains from clothes .

- Some irons generally range in

operating temperature from between
121 °C to 182 °C .

*Principle of operation :
- It’s depend on “ Thermal effect of electric current “ , that’s
meaning When electric current flows through wires and
metallic conductive materials, resistance to the movement of
electrons occurs through resistors
or wires, and this resistance is
converted into thermal energy,
and thus electrical energy is
converted into heating energy .
* Construction of electric iron :

- 1 Heating element : Contain 3 main components :

a) Heating wire :
It’s made of nickel chrome alloy , that because nickel chrome
alloy has some properties :
- High melting point .
- It has a high heat capacity , distributing heat throughout the
entire iron base .
- Small coefficient of thermal expansion .
- Resistant to corrosion and rust .
- Resistant to mechanical factors .

b) Insulator between the heating wire and the iron pipe :

- An insulator made of mica or porcelain to insulate heat and
electricity and prevent short circuits .

c) An iron tube :

- in which the heating wire is placed to

protect it .
- The tube is made of iron or steel to Heater Element In Iron

transfer heat from the heating element

and distribute it to the plate of the iron .

2 - Iron weight :

- it’s used to facilitate the process of

ironing and straightening clothes .

3 -The outer body of the iron : Iron weight

It is made of plastic to insulate electricity and heat , and make it

easy to control the iron by hand .

4 – Thermostat :
- I consider it the most important component of the electric
iron .

- The thermostat is used to control the temperature within a

certain range , and has over-temperature protection to
maintain the normal function of the iron

* Principle operation of thermostat :

- It consists of two different metals, so the expansion of each
metal is different from the
expansion of the other , As a result
of the change in temperature , the
double plate bends and this leads to
an opening The electrical circuit ,
when it cools , returns to its original

5 - The feeding cable (electric iron wire):

- is made of cloth with plastic insulation so that it does not
melt when in contact with the iron .
- It is designed to withstand high temperatures .

6 - An indicator lamp :
- it’s used to ensure that electricity is connected to the iron .
- it works as Indicator .

7 -Connection board :
- It is responsible for connecting
the external elements of the iron
( the iron cable ) to the internal

8 - Temperature control switch :

- It is fixed on the thermostat and regulates the temperature
according to the type of fabric .
* principle of operation :
- its work is that it is a screw fixed on top of the thermostat ,
When you move the key , the screw is tightened or loosened ,
and the temperature is changed.

*Types of electric irons :

1 - Steam Irons :
a) Boiler .
b) Flash .
2 – Dry irons .

*Note :
The steam iron has the same components as the dry iron
“ that we talked about ” with some Minor differences .
* Steam Irons :
- The working principle :
that emits hot steam in any form depends on heating the
water in its tank until it reaches temperature to transform into a
steam state, so that the steam comes out of its nozzles .

* Maintenance and Troubleshooting :
1- The iron does not emit any heat :
- The connection wire cable must be checked by turning the
bazaar button in Avometer .
- Check the electrical wiring , thermostat .
- Verify that all wires inside the iron are connected correctly .

2 -The iron sticks to the the

clothes :
- The problem may be that the
plate of the iron is dirty , and
you must clean the plate and
clean the water tank .

3 - The iron causes electric shock :

- You should check the wires and electrical connections inside
the iron
- Check the insulation surrounding the heating element
- Water leakage and its contact with an electrical wire
( in steam iron ) .
4 – Closing steam holes in the steam iron :
- This happens due to the use of water with High salts .
- To solve this problem , we use distilled water and clean the
holes periodically .
- Filling the iron while it is hot
(unplugged) with vinegar, then rinsing it
and filling it with water again .
