Medical Definition of mamelon
one of the three rounded protuberances on the cutting ridge of a recently
erupted incisor tooth
Developmental Lobes
Each tooth begins to develop from four or more growth center. These centers grow out from the tooth germ and are known as
developmental lobes. The lobes grow and develop within ther bony crypt unt they fuse. Ths fusion of the lobes is calle
{oalescence. The junction that forms the union of these lobes fs marked by ines onthe tooth cll developmental grooves,
which can be seen‘on the toth after it has erupted
“The number of developmental lobes necessary fr the formation of a tooth depends onthe particular tooth and how many cusps
ithas: For instance, athe anter teeth develop from four lnbesthee labial and one lingual. The thee labial lobes frm tye labial
surface of each tooth. The mamelons, which are evident afer the eruption of incisor teeth, are the incisal ridges ofthese tree
labial developmental lobes, and they siso are separated by developmental grooves (see Fig. 2-22),
in Fig 5-2 notice how the three labial lobes fuse to form the entire labial surface. The only evidence that three separate lobes
existed athe incisal ridge, where the mamelons are dint and separate. and onthe labial surface ofthe toth, where
evelopment ines or grooves are evident. The tee labial developmental bes are called the mesiofacia, centofaca, and
istoacalobes. The sole lingual lobe is appropriately called the igual lobe and makes Up the entire cingulum on the lingual
Surface ofthe tooth.
