PRE CALCULUS WEEK 1 AND 2

An angle is the amount of rotation generated when a ray is rotated about its endpoint.
The initial position of the ray is referred to as the initial side of the angle.
The position of the ray at the end of its rotation is called the terminal side of the angle.
The arrowhead is pointed at the terminal side.
The endpoint of the ray is the vertex of the angle.
An angle is in standard position if it is drawn in the xy-plane with its vertex at the origin and its initial side
on the positive x-axis.

Example 2. Illustrate/draw the following angles in standard position.

Coterminal Angles
Two angles in standard position that have a common terminal side are called coterminal angles.
Example 4.
A. Determine the measure of the smallest positive angle coterminal with the given angle.

Arc Length and Area of a Sector

Example 5. a. Find the length of an arc of a circle with radius 10 m that subtends a central angle of 30°.
b. A central angle θ in a circle of radius 4 m is subtended by an arc of length 6 m. Find the measure of
θ in radians.
c. Find the radius of a circle if a central angle of 135° intercepts an arc whose length is 2 cm.

Linear velocity is the measure of how fast the arc length, s , is increasing/decreasing.

a. Find the area of a sector of a circle with central angle 60° if the radius is 3 m.
b. A sprinkler on a golf course fairway is set to spray water over a distance of 70 feet and rotates
through an angle of 120°. Find the area of the fairway watered by the sprinkler.
c. What is the radius of a circle in which a central angle of 150° determines a sector of area 32 square
inches ?
Solution. θ = 150° ; A = 32 ¿2 ; r = ?
d. In Figure 3.6, AE and BC are arcs of two concentric circles with center at D. If AD = 2 cm,
BD = 8 cm, and ∠ADE = 75°, find the area of the region AECB.
e. In Figure 3.7, AB and DE are diameters. If AB = 12 cm and ∠AOD = 126°, find the area of the
shaded region.
