LESSON1| THE CHARACTERISTICS OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS

PROCESS
1.Who were the artists who started contemporary art in the Philippines?

In the Philippines, the artists who started contemporary art is first, VictorioEdades– he was the first
to break the The Heavy Black Carabao by Romeo Tabuenarules of art. He did not show natural forms
nor perspective and use bold strokes and bright colors. The early contemporary artists, like
Carlos‘Botong’Francisco and Galo Ocampo, were influenced by western artists. Abstraction,
expressionism, and surrealism were evident in their paintings. Other artists experimented with
forms. In Romeo Tabuena's painting, the heavy black carabao is shown standing on thin legs that
disappear in a flat background. Hernando Ocampo used geometric forms in strong red colors
overlapping with shades of yellow to brown.Vicente Manansala painted in abstract cubism his
human forms engaged in genre such as those in market scene. Cesar Legaspi used his art as a
commentary to the state of hard labor in the Philippines. He employed transparent cubism with a
lot of flowing lines that give movement to his human forms.

2.What are the characteristics of contemporary art?

Contemporary art is not confined to the museum. They are also found in galleries, art schools, side
streets, and public spaces like the train or bus stations, shopping centers or parks. The work of
contemporary artists is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that
challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy definition. Diverse and eclectic, contemporary art is
distinguished by the very lack of a uniform or ganizing principle, or ideology. The genre of this art is
believed to have started in the late 1960s by the end of modernism art era.Characteristics: The most
prominent feature of contemporary art is the fact that it has no distinct feature or a single
characteristic. It is defined by the artist's ability to innovate and bring out a modern masterpiece.

3.Why is“process”rather than“sale’important in contemporary art making?

The process is important in contemporary art-making rather than sale, because process is way more
important than sale, unless sale is part of the art. Process is the art. When someone paints a picture,
that's a process. What essential to contemporary artists therefore, is the process of art-making. It is
the experience for example, of dipping one' s hands in to a pail of paint and making markings on a
flat surface that matters to the contemporary artist. It is not how much money they make out of the
final artwork. It is the movement in dance that matters, or the plot that is communicated to the film
viewers that is important.

OUTPUT
Search in the Internet for contemporary art works that are based on one that has been done in
the past. Copy and paste the original and new images side by side and then do the following in
writing:
1.Describe the artwork
ELEANORdone by an artist in the past.
ALDRICH JOHN SINGER SARGENT
Sunglasses and a Veil (after Smoke of Ambergris, 1880
The painting givesSargent),
viewers2017
a humorous spin on an old classic. Sargent's hauntingly beautiful and
deeply Orientalist 1880 master work belies the 19th century exoticization of Middle Eastern and
North African culture, the kind of Eurocentric gaze that is only now being reevaluated in artcircles.
This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art.

2.Describe the new artwork based on the previous artwork.

Aldrich's heavily impastoed rendition of this famous work includes a pair of orange sunglasses,
simultaneously under cutting the original's grandeur and reminding us of its inherently touristic
roots. Aldrich's frenetic, heavy hand reminds us that this is a painting about painting, poignant and
problematic at the same time.

3.Compare the two. What qualities of contemporary art are manifested in the new artwork.

The artwork of Eleanor Aldrich reflect contemporary issues, ideas and thoughts which are subject to
reprimand behavior or bring change in the society. While the art work of John Singer Sargent reflect
ancient ideas, lessons and themes that are intended to impact the current generation or people.
Abstract art“blewup”the art world in an explosion of forms and color, starting in the 1920s, with a
few outlies earlier. There are always phases and periods in the work of an artist. Although they can
be related to each other and interpreted in terms of evolutionary change, they fundamentally
represent what Robert Hughes called the shock of the new.

LESSON2| SUBJECT MATTER AND STYLE IN CONTEMPORARY ARTS

PROCESS
1.What are the common subject matter in contemporary art?

Subject matter in contemporary art is not confined to representations of human figures and
landscapes. The favourite subjects in contemporary art are children, women, or the environment,
such as Juan Alcazaren's Flora and Fauna. It can also be a combination of any of these. In some
artworks, the subject matter is not easily recognized. If the artwork is an experimenton technique,
the subject matter is the technique itself. In others, such as those inconceptual art, the viewer has to
engage in thinking and exploring the meaning of the artwork. Some artworks are intended to make
a statement about an issue so the viewer is guided by a written explanation.

2.Choose two major styles in contemporary art and differentiate them from each other?

Environmental Art involves the artistic creation or manipulation of space such as landscape or
architectural design that may enclose its audience. Earthworks, or art using stones, leaves, trees,
grass or other natural elements are included in this category. While, Body Art is an art form that
uses the body as the medium or main material. It can be painted or clothed and used to perform
artistic act in public. Tattooing and piercing are examples of body art.

3.How interactive art-making done in contemporary art? Give example.

Through the more than 100 styles but can be categorized under the few big movements in art.
Contemporary art styles describe the way the artwork looks. Style is basically the manner in which
the artist portrays his or her subject matter and how the artist expresses his or her vision. And
contemporary artists’ artistic works are expressions of freedom, experimentation and exploration of
patterns, figures, objects, and a combination of many things that are important to them. For
example –kinetic art, opart, digital and body art.
