Listening & Communicating

INTRODUCTION
Listening is an act of putting an effort on hearing someone or something. And when we
say communicating, it happens when two or more people are exchanging their thoughts, ideas,
opinions, etc.
Listening and communicating in a school setting, happens between the teacher and the
students, the students and their classmates, the teacher and the parents, and even the teacher
and his or her colleagues.

Benefits of Listening and Communicating to Educators

1. Building Relationships
The teacher gives empathy to the students whatever they may be going through. It
strengthens the teacher-and-student relationship.

Example:
A student shares to his/her teacher about his/her problem at home with his/her
parents. Then, the teacher would give an advice in return.

2. Positive Learning Environment

The teacher accommodates the problems of the students upon learning a particular
lesson, the teacher finds ways to be able to make the students understand.

Example:
One student could not understand the lesson, and expressed this to his/her teacher. The
teacher then discusses the lesson again for them to understand it clearly.
3. Encourage Collaboration with Colleagues
The situation occurs between a teacher his or her colleague/s, wherein they would share
their thoughts or ideas about certain academic works, like the type of assessment they
will be using in a class, the teaching materials to be used, and the teaching
methodologies to be applied. It gives an idea that through listening and communicating,
the teachers will get to collaborate to find a solution to a problem.

Example:
The teacher shares his/her problem to a colleague about how he/she finds it hard how
to teach a particular lesson. The latter will then share what particular teaching methods
or materials he/she might be able to use.

4. Supporting Student Development

It enables the teachers to ensure the students that their failure and mistakes in their
learning journey can be changed if they communicate their difficulties. And the teacher
herself or himself would get to evaluate if his or her teaching methodology was effective
or not.

Example:
The teacher noticed that most of the students got a low score in their exam, and the
teacher in return encouraged the students to express their difficulties. And the teacher
motivates them to do better next time.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, listening and communicating are essential tools to build a strong
collaborative relationship with the students. The glue word for listening and communicating is
"understanding," because without a sense of understanding, the other person will not know
where you are coming from, which will cause confusion and misunderstanding. It is the
foundation of a positive learning environment where students and teachers can learn from each
other and have a give-and-take relationship.
