General feeling of well-being

The electrical muscle stimulation/neuromuscular stimulation units EM40 and EM80 made by Beurer are combined TENS/ EMS/massage units. This innovative equipment offers a variety of functions to promote a feeling of well-being: it can relieve pain, maintain physical fitness, reduce tension, revitalize tired muscles and combat fatigue. A third of all European households suffers from chronical pain (Pain in Europe Survey, 2006). Many of the affected attempt to treat themselves. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) units can help here as they can treat physical pain without causing side-effects. For a general feeling of well-being our bodies need to be healthy, fit and relaxed. In these media-dominated days, a high value is placed on having a slim, exercised and wellproportioned body. However, the objective of a well-shaped body requires continuous training and healthy nutrition. To shore up your active training program, you could conceivably use the EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) unit simply to stimulate your muscles, or to warm them up, make them more toned or taut, or relax them. It is important to understand, however, that using the EMS unit will not replace an active training program. But targeted application of the EMS unit will cause additional stimulation of the muscles and hence increase the result obtained during training. This guidebook will attempt to explain TENS and EMS in more detail, and in particular how the Beurer units work.

How the electrical muscle stimulation/neuromuscular stimulation units work

Electrical muscle stimulation/neuromuscular stimulation units work by reproducing the bodys own pulses via electrodes that pass pulses through the skin to nerve and muscle fibers. These electrodes can be attached to many different parts of the body as the electrical stimuli are not painful. All you can feel sometimes is a slight tingling or vibration. For optimal results, use should be regularly and accompanied by physical activity, healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle. The electrical pulses mainly affect the nerves and muscles in the application area.

TENS
TENS, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, has been clinically tested and licensed as an effective, drug-free method for the treatment of physical pain and has no sideeffects when used properly. It can even be used by lay-people for simple applications. The pain-relieving or pain-suppressant effect is amongst others achieved by: Suppression of pain transmission in nerve fibres (especially high-frequency pulses) and Increasing production of the bodys own endorphins (especially low-frequency pulses within TENS). The method is scientifically validated and medically approved. This applies in particular for the following therapeutic indications: Back pain Point pain Neuralgic pain 48 49 Headache 33 32 Gynecological disorders Pain after acute injury Pain by circulatory disorder

Patients with chronic pain were treated with TENS in a survey (Pothmann, 2003, after Eriksson and Sjlund, 1989). Selected results obtained are presented in the table below:

EMS
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a common method and has been used for years in rehabilitation and sports medicine. EMS is used supplementary in the field of sport and fitness to train muscles conventionally and achieve easier an efficient, slim and attractive body. The application of EMS has two directions. On the one hand the strengthening of muscles, on the other hand a relaxing effect. To the first cluster belong: Muscle training to boost endurance performance and / or Muscle training to shape desired body proportions To the second cluster belong: Relaxation of muscles to release muscular tension Improvement of muscular fatigue Speed up the regeneration of muscles after high muscular performance (e.g. after marathon) So that you can make a personal training program to suit you, the EM 40 and EM 80 have a freeze function. " see Doctors Function.

Current parameters
The Beurer Electrical muscle stimulation/neuromuscular stimulation units operate using four different currents, as described in more detail below: A. Wave (pulse shape):
I monophasic pulse
pulse intensity

This describes the time course of a single pulse taking into account the course of the pulse intensity over the time axis. Biphasic pulses are I biphasic pulse used in the Beurer units (symmetrical). Unlike monophasic current pulses, they offer the benefit of a high degree of safety to the user and low muscle fatigue. B. Pulse frequency: The frequency gives the number of single pulses per second, and is quoted in Hz (Hertz).
I period time

Time

The frequency determines which types of muscle fiber will react preferred. Slow-reacting fibers react to low pulse frequencies of up to 15 Hz, quick-reacting fibers on the other hand respond from approx. 35 Hz upwards. At pulses of approx. 45-70 Hz, the muscles are permanently tensed and become fatigued rapidly. Higher pulse frequencies should therefore be preferred for rapid and maximum power training. C. Pulse duration:
I
pulse duration

This gives the duration of a single pulse in microseconds. Hence pulse duration determines amongst others the depth of penetration of the current. In general, the following rule applies: larger muscle masses require larger pulse durations. D. Pulse intensity:
I

Adjusting the intensity is a very personal matter and depends on the subjective experience of each individual user. It should always be set below the pain threshold. The adjustment depends on the treatment time, too.

In the Beurer products, the current parameters are always pre-set to a sensible, proven level. However, you have the opportunity to make individual adjustments in order to find the most agreeable and promising level for you. Before the use of the units it is always recommended to consult a doctor to discuss the desired application.

Doctors Function
The Beurer EM 40 and EM 80 electrical muscle stimulation/ neuromuscular stimulation units offer one outstanding feature: The Doctors Function. This is a special freeze function so that you can call up your own specific program quickly and simply at any time. That is a locked program remains stored even after the unit has been switched off, and when it is turned on again this program is called up to standby status and activated by simply pressing the power button. The setting of the individual program can e.g. happen after advice of you doctor. So you gain easiest access to your personal treatment program.
