The 1992 Miss Universe edition
was held in Bangkok, Thailand.
It was the first time that
Thailand hosted the pageant,
the second was in 2005. The
venue was Queen Sirikit
National Convention Centre in
Bangkok. There were 78
countries participating in this
pageant. This year was
considered as one of the strongest year, because some veterans in Miss World
last year participated. They were: Michelle McLean (5th; NAMIBIA), Lisa Marie de Montalk (SF; NEW
ZEALAND), Anke van Dermeersch (unplaced; BELGIUM),Yvette Peggy Jordison (unplaced; CAYMAN
ISLANDS), Svava Haraldsdottir (unplaced; ICELAND) and Sandra Aegerter (unplaced; SWITZERLAND).
The early favorites were: Misses Venezuela (Carolina Iszak, the most local favorite), Namibias Michelle
McLean, Colombias Paola Turbay, Indias Madhu Sapre (considered as Asias bet), Icelands Svava
Haraldsdottir, the Netherlands Vivian Jansen, Belgiums Anke van Dermeersch and the hometown girl
Thailands Ornanong Panyawong. Many people thought that Venezuela would take its 4th Miss Universe
crown, because Carolina Iszak was so elegant and very beautiful and it was easy for her to take the
crown.
SAWASDEE!!! Welcome! Thats what two
former Miss Universes from Thailand:
Apasra Hongsakula (1965) and Pornthip
Nakhirunkanok (1988) welcomed all
audiences worldwide to the pageant. Its
a very good opening number for Miss
Universe 1992 in Bangkok. The pageant
was hosted by Dick Clark with the special
commentator from Entertainment
Tonights Liza Gibbons and former Miss
Universe 1989 Hollands Angela Visser
(Angela has probably been yhe best
commentator Miss Universe ever had).
And then, its the time to announce the Top 10 Semifinalists,
they were: Misses Australia, Sweden, India, Netherlands, New
Zealand, USA, Colombia, Namibia, Venezuela and Belgium. The
people of Thailand were so dissappointed as their candidate
didnt make the cut. Misses Sweden and Iceland were tied at
10th position overall, but the judges chose Miss Sweden
because she had a higher score in Interview preliminary. Three
giants entered the Top 10, they were Misses Venezuela,
Namibia and Belgium.

`' .'. .
(arranged by their preliminary scores):

Miss Venezuela Carolina Iszak Kemenify (9.477)
Carolina is a fashion model in Venezuela with 6 tall. She is the most local favorite
and many people thought that she would take the crown easily.

Miss Namibia Michelle McLean (9.147)
She competed in Miss World 1991 and placed 5th there. She was considered as a
strong contender in Miss Universe 92. She was as tall as Miss Venezuelas Carolina
Iszak and she was Carolinas strong rival. She was the first Namibian to enter the
semifinal in Miss Universe history.

Miss Belgium Anke van Dermeersch (8.983)
This Belgiums sexy-bomb was a surprise as she was unplaced in MW last year but
she placed 3rd overall in the preliminaries. She even bet Miss New Zealand, who
was a semifinalist in MW last year. She had the best catwalk skill in the pageant
and you wouldnt forget it!

Miss Colombia Paola Turbay (8.969)
Paola is a beautiful girl but she missed in height. Because of her eloquence,
elegance, intelligence and confidence, she was proper in this place.

Miss India Madhu Sapre (8.952)
Madhu was an athlete and also a model in India. Thats why she looked fit and full
of energy everytime.

Miss Netherlands Vivian Jansen (8.921)
Many her countrymen hoped that she would be the 2nd Miss Universe from
Holland after Angela Visser won in 1989. She was cute and beautiful.

Miss USA Shannon Marketic (8.874)
She was not a favorite, but she had a good figure as a semifinal. She was a surprise
that year.

Miss Australia Georgina Denahy (8.805)
She was a favorite from Down Under and you know, she wore a very cute national costume with
a koala doll.

Miss New Zealand Lisa Marie de Montalk (8.789)
Lisa was a semifinalist in Miss World 91. She was the first semifinalist from New Zealand since
the victory of Lorraine Downes in 1983.

Miss Sweden Monica Brodd (8.773)
She was tied with the favorite Miss Iceland for 10th place. Sweden advanced due
to a higher score in interview preliminary competition.

Then, its the time for Swimsuit Competition. The stage was beautifully designed with many
Thailands big orchid and a bridge on the stage. It was really great! All semifinalist wore the pink
swimsuit from Catalina. Its color was very proper to blonde semifinalists (Australia, Sweden, Belgium,

Then, Lupita Jones did the farewell walk
