Monthly Newsletter November 2011

THE RECTORS RAMBLINGS

November 1st is the Feast of All Saints, what I like to refer to as Gods Greatest Hits. In the old days every saints day was a festival which meant that less and less work was done as more and more saints were placed on the calendar. Eventually they came up with All Saints as a catch all for most of the saints, allowing for local holidays for local saints. Less often noticed is November 2, All Souls Day, or the Feast of All the Faithful Departed. This is the celebration for everyone else. It is the custom in the church to remember all of those who have died in the previous year in the prayers on All Souls Day. In order to include as many of our family in these celebrations as possible we observe both All Saints and All Souls on the first Sunday in November. Many find the reading of the names of our Faithful Departed to be one of the most moving times of the year. This is also a good day to spend a little time in St. Andrews churchyard, looking at the names of those we have known and loved, and also those who we do not know. It is a reminder that we who pray and play and serve here do so because of the legacy which others have left for us. It is also a reminder that we are leaving a legacy for those who follow. This trust has been given to us to carry faithfully and then hand on. As we come to the climax of our stewardship campaign on Commitment Sunday All Saints/All Souls Celebration, let us reflect on the gift that St. Andrews is in each of our lives and the trust we have been given to nurture its growth and pass it on to another generation. You will be receiving your Estimate of Giving Cards this week. I know that you have been thinking and praying about what you can do to support our mission and ministry at St. Andrews. Please respond generously to build on the trust we have been given.

For all the saints, who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia!

FISH SUNDAYS FAMILIES IN SERVICE TO HIM

SENIOR WARDEN REPORT

I hope everyone was able to attend the Fall Facts and Fun Festival October 2nd. The committee headed by Beth Green did an outstanding job organizing this wonderful event for our parish. I would like to thank all of the committee participants in the festival. I have received much positive feedback from lots of people who attended. This was a great way to see what we have to offer and now parishioners can get involved. The food was wonderful. Many thanks to Linda Brown and Leslie Owen for their outstanding preparation and delicious eats for us all.

MARKS MUSINGS
A few Sundays ago I preached a sermon on the Ten Commandments. Typically the Commandments draw up all sorts of negative feelings for many different reasons. In The Ten Commandments from the The Back Side, author J. Ellsworth Kalas, shows how a simple change in the lens through which we look can have a dramatic effect. I think Jesus very much did this in his telling of the parables, taking what seemed to tell us one thing and he gave us a different lens to look through. As we go through life, may we have the wisdom, strength, and resolve to follow Christ's lead and be willing to look at our world through a different lens. The Ten Commandments From The Back Side by J. Ellsworth Kalas 1. God shall have all of you. 2. You shall adore the mystery that is beyond comprehension. 3. You shall enter into God's name. 4. The Sabbath will keep you. 5. You shall accept the blessing of the past so that you can have a future. 6. You shall embrace life. 7. You shall cherish the sacredness in yourself and your mate. 8. You shall bless and be blessed by the truth. 9. You shall become a larger person. 10. You shall rejoice in your neighbor's having. Blessings, Mark+

EPISCOPAL YOUTH COMMUNITY

St. Andrews EYC energy is in full swing. Our kick-off event was September 11, we attended our first conference in Washington, NC, at the end of September; and in early October we had a beach sweep and cookout at the Spruills house; discussed a few of Rob Bells NOOMA Series. Not only has our youths energy been impressive, but their ability to work as a team is too. This was evident at the UNCW Ropes Course on October 17. We had a group of 15 youth and four adults step up and finish the UNCW Challenge Course. It tested our team building ability through a series of exercises and a ropes course. Our journey at UNCW started with a short hike in the woods to the Challenge Course, and then we spent the morning participating in a few games and challenges, where we had to display initiative and problem solve as well as communicate and work together as a group. Following the morning activities and a picnic lunch, we moved on to the event we had all been waiting for the ropes course. We had the opportunity to do the low and high ropes courses, both were part of a 35-foot-plus structure that contained more than 10 challenging elements and a zip line. Many of us stepped out of comfort zones and faced some as we tackled the courses. This could not have been done without the help and encouragement of our teammates.

It was a beautiful fall day at the UNCW Ropes Course, where we had a blast and the opportunity to grow personally and as a group a must do for next year! We had a full schedule in October, and November looks to be another exciting month. Thank you to those who participated in Trunk-or-Treat. We also appreciate everyone who purchases a wreath in support of our Nashville mission work in July.

Time, Talents, and Treasure

"Come and See." The harvest of your time, talents, and treasure will be recognized here each month. INSIDE INNER CITY MINISTRIES Mel and Linda Smith began Inner City Ministries eleven years ago with the hope of bringing a hot meal and Holy Scripture at noon on Sundays to all in need. In their present location, they use two covered outdoor facilities belonging to Hope Baptist Church at the corner of Martin and 14th for their ministry. One shelter is used for serving food while the other is used beforehand to offer a place to sit and listen to words of Scripture and songs. Between 50 and 100 persons attend each Sunday. St. Andrew's became active in the food service under the leadership of Virginia Colantuono who later brought Carolyn Farley and her mother, Nan, on board.

portunity to give thanks and give to others. Additional sharing has been with freshly baked cookies from the EYC and Sunday School classes, and budgeted financial assistance by our Vestry. Many thanks to you, Virginia, and to your volunteers, and to all who donate to see this ministry continue, and to all in the future who jump in and support this effort. And thanks be to God.

SIGN UP FOR ALTAR OR SANCTUARY CANDLES FOR 2012

This is a wonderful way to honor or remember loved ones. A donation of $25.00 will be billed to you later. The sign-up sheets are on the TABLE. There are only four available dates due to repeating contributors. If you have any questions, please call Donna Hancock @ 256-8754.

Frances Goodman and Virginia are shown above serving the meal along with other volunteers on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Other parishioners who volunteer on the rotating schedule are: Becky and Jim Fawks, Judy and Mort Neblett, Tina Poisson, and Laura Wells. Another avenue for participation in this ministry is donating needed items listed each month in the Soundings. This month they are calling for practical items such as soap, clean shirts, gloves, and white athletic socks to fill the Christmas gift bags. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you may want to seize this op-

Thank you to everyone that participated in and attended the Fall Festival in October. We are all part of a wonderful church!

PRESCHOOL NEWS
What a fabulous year so far! The teachers are doing an excellent job getting the children settled into schedules and learning new things each day. We continue to have music and chapel each week as part of our routine and the children have already mastered the songs and prayers. On Mondays we also have a dance class taught by Ms. Estes. Thank you for your positive comments during the Fall Festival. It is truly a blessing to have such a wonderful preschool as part of St. Andrew's. Fondly, Catharine Hedrick

INNER CITY MINISTRIES

Each holiday season St. Andrew's contributes to the gift bags given to the homeless at a Christmas party hosted by the Inner City Ministry program. The gift bags contain practical items such as soap, clean shirts, gloves, and hats for the colder weather. This year we have been asked to contribute men's white athletic socks to this effort. Please place those items under The Table in the church in the month of November so that we can deliver them to those who will be preparing the gift bags for the party in December. Thank you as always for your support of this ministry. Virginia Colantuono 910-256-2954 vcolantuono@ec.rr.com
