1.1. MOTOR AND OTHER ELECTRONIC COMPONENT SELECTION

Table 5.1.1 Thrust/Weight variation The thrust required can be determined by

the Thrust-to-Weight ratio.

Type of Aircraft Thrust to WeightAsRatio
the Thrust-to-Weight ratio rises, the

Glider/Trainer 0.35 to 0.55 aircraft's acceleration increases, leading to a

Scale Flight 0.55 to 0.70 higher climb rate. A greater Thrust-to-Weight

Sport and Slow Acrobatic 0.70 to 0.80 ratio results in an elevated climb performance.

Acrobatic Fast 0.80 to 1.00 The Thrust/Weight ratio is estimated from Table

Jets and 3D 1.00 to 2.5 No 5.1.1.

Using, Thrust/Weight = 0.55

Thrust = 0.55 × Weight

Thrust = 0.55 × (Empty Weight + Estimated Payload)

Thrust = 0.55 × (4+5) = 4.95 kg

The chosen motor for the aircraft is the "SunnySky X4120 III 480KV" based on the required thrust.

When paired with an EOLO 16*8 propeller, it provides max thrust of 6780gf while drawing a current of

80.8A. To sustain this current draw, a Hobbywing Skywalker 100Amps Electronic Speed Controller

(ESC) is selected. The Battery used in this RC Plane is a LiPo Battery of 10000mah 6S 22.2V. The

motor datasheet is mentioned in Appendix A.

1.2. STATIC THRUST

To measure static thrust, a test rig was designed using four mild steel plates welded together to form a

square. Two sides of the square have four holes for motor mounting. The team added 6 kg of weight to

the test rig and mounted the motor. Then, gradually increased the throttle and noted the weight

reduction. The difference between the initial weight and the final weight is the static thrust of the motor.
