Weather Outlook for Mauritius, Rodrigues and St-Brandon, issued at 1610 hours on Sunday
18 February 2024.
General Situation
1. The Tropical cyclone Djoungou has intensified into an intense tropical cyclone in the morning
today and it continues to evolve in a favorable environment. At 16h00 today, it was centered near
latitude 19.8 degrees south and longitude 78.8 degrees east, that is at a distance of about 1650 km
almost to the east of Rodrigues. It is moving in a general east-south-easterly direction at an
accelerated speed of about 35 km/h.
Most weather models indicate that Djoungou will maintain this intensity till tomorrow and as it will
move to higher latitudes, it will transition to a post tropical system. It does not represent a threat
since it will continue to move away from the Mascarenes Islands towards the south-east.
2. The low-level circulation off the north-east coast of Madagascar has intensified into a tropical
disturbance this morning and it is expected to continue to develop. Latest satellite image indicate
more organized convective clouds in the vicinity of the system. Most weather models are
intensifying the system as from early this week while moving initially towards the north east. There
is likelihood that this system may reach the naming stage during the night of Monday 19 to early
Tuesday 20 morning. However, there are still some uncertainties regarding the intensity and
movement of the system. The Mauritius Meteorological Services is keeping a close watch on the
evolution of this system.
