Probability
Objectives:
1. To illustrates the mean and variance
of a discrete random variable;
2. To calculates the mean and the
variance of a discrete random
variable;
3. To interprets the mean and the
variance of a discrete random
variable.
Lesson 3:

Mean and Variance of

a Discrete Probability
Distribution
Mean
- average
- it is a measure of central
tendency of a probability
distribution.
Mean
- “expected value” (EV)
- the possible outcome and
the possible probabilities.

Variance
- measures of variability
- tells you the spread
between your data set. The
more spread the data, the
larger the variance is in
relation to the mean..
Variance
- denoted by 𝝈 𝟐 or V(X)
- could be computed by getting
the average of the product of
the squared deviation from
mean x and probabilities
V(X) = 𝟐
𝑬(𝒙 ) - 𝑬(𝒙) 𝟐
Standard Deviation
- denoted by 𝝈 or Sd(X)
- the measure of how spread
out numbers are.
- it is the positive square root
of variance.
Sd(X) = 𝑽(𝑿)
Variance
𝟐 𝟐
V(X) = 𝑬(𝒙 ) - 𝑬(𝒙)
