MEC103 – REMOVAL EXAM

1. Determine the largest weight W that can be supported by two wires shown in the figure. The stress in either
wire is not to exceed 30 ksi. The cross-sectional areas of wires AB and AC are 0.4 in 2 and 0.5 in2, respectively.

2. Find the stresses in members AB, BC and BD for the truss shown. Indicate the tension or compression. The
cross sectional area of each member is 1600 mm2.

3. The lap joint shown in the figure is fastened by four ¾-in.-diameter rivets. Calculate the maximum safe load P
that can be applied if the shearing stress in the rivets is limited to 14 ksi and the bearing stress in the plates is
limited to 18 ksi. Assume the applied load is uniformly distributed among the four rivets.

4. The members of the structure weigh 200 lb/ft. Determine the smallest diameter pin that can be used at A if
the shearing stress is limited to 5000 psi. Assume single shear.
5. The steel strip has a uniform thickness of 50 mm. Compute the
elongation of the strip caused by the 500-kN axial force. The modulus of
elasticity of steel is 200 GPa.

6. At room temperature (20oC) a 0.5mm gap exists between the ends of the rods shown.
At a later time when the temperature has reached 140oC, determine (a) the normal
stress in the aluminum rod, (b) the change in length of the aluminum rod.

7.

8. Two vertical forces are applied to a simply supported beam having the cross section shown in the figure.
Determine the maximum tension and compression bending stresses produced in segment BC of the beam.

9. A WT230 × 26 standard steel shape is used to support the loads shown on the beam. The dimensions from the
top and bottom of the shape to the centroidal axis are shown on the sketch of the cross section. Consider the
entire 4-m length of the beam and determine:
