devices that signify any intentional deviation from literal
meaning in order to generate a creative or meaningful
effect.

Common Figures of C Personification

Speech in Literature Attribution of a human characteristic
to something nonhuman.

A Simile
An explicit comparison of one thing
to another, often through the use of
the terms “as” or “like”.
B Metaphor
Indicates an implicit or more direct
comparison of one thing with
another.
D Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements that are not
meant to be taken literally.
E Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or
sound at the beginning of closely
connected words.
