Vertical Projectile Motion

in One Dimension (1D)

MS N MBULI
Definitions
 Projectile: An object which has been given an initial velocity and
then it moves under the influence of the gravitational force only.
 Free-fall: motion during which the only force acting on an object is
the gravitational force.
Use equations of motion
N.B

 Gravitational acceleration “ → g ” is constant and always directed

downwards even when the object is moving upwards.
 Therefore:
• If upwards direction is chosen as positive gravitational
acceleration ( → g ) will be negative.
• If downwards direction is chosen as positive gravitational
acceleration ( → g ) will be positive.
Position vs time, velocity vs time
and acceleration vs time graphs.
Dropping A Projectile
Projectile shot up, then falls down
A projectile projected vertically
upwards which falls back to the
same level
A projectile projected vertically
upwards which falls below the
original level.
