The NEC 2020 code now requires new dwelling units and remodel service change outs to provide

surge
protection. This applies to single family, 2 family, and multifamily applications. This is a long overdue
requirement for today’s residential electrical distribution. Rural America has an aging utility grid that is
operating more efficiently by switching grid networks often. Inside the home we have many switching
power supplies in consumer electronics. No to be ignored are EMI sources such as increased wireless
communicating devices as well. Adding whole house surge protection in compliance to NEC 230.67 helps
in three ways.

1) Mitigates unwanted electrical disturbances in power system.

2) Protects consumer electronics from damaging voltage surge.
3) Fails on sustained over voltage indicated power quality issue.

Eaton has long provided multiple surge protective devices for residential
homes. In 2020 we’re leading the effort to provide cost effective and easy to install products. The
BRSURGE and CHSA has been priced competitively as of January 1, 2020. By September we will be
releasing updated products with plug on neutral and pigtail versions. Our surge breakers, such as the
CH230 remain a perfect fit for hot water tank applications which will also meet the NEC requirement for
whole house surge protection. Finally, the CHSPT2ULTA remains the gold standard in protection offering
a 5-year warrantee in addition to code compliance.
