Chapter 19: Film & Screen Imaging &

Processing
What is the purpose of radiographic processing?
to deposit black metallic silver into a latent image to make it a visible image

What's another name screen film?

intensifying-screen film

What is a latent image?
unseen changes in the atomic structure of the crystal lattice that results in the production of a
visible image

What are the four steps in film processing?

1) Developing
2) Fixing
3) Washing
4) Drying

What happens during the developing step of film processing?

- silver is deposited onto the latent image
- an image becomes visible, amplifying density

What happens during the fixing step of film processing?

- a clearing agent bonds w/ unexposed silver ions & removes them
- prevents image from blackening after being exposed to light
What happens during the washing step of film processing?
water is used to remove fixer & developer solutions from film

What happens during the drying step of film processing?

- forcing hot air over both sides of the film as it exits the processor
- hot air sets final hardening to the emulsion & seals the supercoat

What 2 pieces of equipment are used to produce a uniform range of densities on a film?
1) penetrometer
2) sensitometer
What is a penetrometer used for?
film response to exposure & processing
Does a penetrometer test processing/printers?
NO
What is another name for a penetrometer?
step wedge
How does a penetrometer work?
processes & exposes the film, then measures the densities
What is a sensitometer designed to do?
- once the image is exposed to light the sensitometer absorbs a calibrated amount of light
- leaves the image with a uniform amount of light throughout it
What does a penetrometer evaluate/monitor? (3 things)
- evaluates exposure factors systems
- evaluates intensifying screens
- monitors processing equipment
How does a sensitometer work?
uses a controlled light source to emit equal amounts of light each time it is triggered
Does a sensitometer test processing/printers?
YES
What does a densitometer designed to do?
- measure the amount of light transmitted through the film
- reads amount of blackness (density) on a film
- measures optical density
How does a densitometer work?
- consists of a calibrated uniform light & an optical sensor
