Properties of Fluids
1) Express the dimensions of each of the following quantities in terms of the basic Mass,
Length, and Time (M.L.T). put their units in S.I unit system.
a) Velocity b) Acceleration c) Force
d) Density (ρ) e) Specific weight (γ) f) Specific volume
g) Specific gravity (S) h) Work i) Power j) Pressure
k) Viscosity (μ) l) Kinematic viscosity (ν) m) Surface tension.
4) Calculate the specific weight, density, and specific gravity of a liquid having a volume
as 4 m3 and weighting 3000 kg.
5) Define the bulk modulus of elasticity K, and show that it is equivalent to , where
P is the pressure and ρ is the density. Find the increase in pressure required to
increase the density of a liquid by 0.04 % if its modulus of elasticity is 1.4 * 1010 N/m2.
7) The trust of a shaft is taken by collar bearing provided with a film of oil of uniform
thickness between the surface of the collar and the surface of the bearing . the
internal and external diameters of the collar are 10 cm and 15 cm respectively. If the
thickness of oil film separating the two surfaces is 0.25 mm and the oil viscosity is 0.91
N.s/m2, find the power lost to overcome viscous resistance when the shaft rotates at
300 rpm.

8) A conical thrust bearing of semi cone angle 30o revolves at 600 rpm inside a casing as
shown in fig. The maximum con diameter 30 cm and shaft diameter 10 cm, the
thickness of fluid layer is 0.1 cm viscosity is 1 poise. Calculate the rate of heat
dissipated in bearing.
9) A soap bubble 62.5 mm diameter has an internal pressure in excess of the outside
pressure of 20 N/m2. What is tension in the soap film?
