ACKNOWLWEDGMENT:

I would like to say thank you to my group members who invested their time and effort

productively, into this challenging world-wide topic of “Smoking”. The successful

completion of this study would not have been possible without our HSB teacher. Therefore, I

would also like to express my appreciation to Miss Rhoda Toolsie for her full academic

support, supervision and guidance over the years.

3
TOPIC STATEMENT:

Smoking, the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. A variety of

plants have been smoked, including marijuana and hashish, but the act is most certainly

common with tobacco as smoked in a cigarette, cigar or pipe.

4
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body and causes many illnesses/diseases affecting
the health of smokers in general. Some health warnings that can be seen on US cigarette
packs today are as follows-

Tobacco smoke can harm your children.

Tobacco smoke causes lung disease in non-smokers.

Smoking causes head and neck cancer.

Smoking causes bladder cancer, which lead to a bloody urine.

Smoking during pregnancy stunts fetal growth.

Smoking can cause heart disease and strokes by clogging arteries.

Smoking causes COPD, a disease that can affect the lung.

Smoking reduces blood flow to the limbs, which can lead to amputation.

Smoking causes type 2 diabetes, which raises blood sugar.

Smoking causes age- related macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness.

Smoking cause cataracts, which can lead to blindness.

Smoking reduces blood flow, which leads to erectile dysfunction.

5
PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Tobacco is the leading causes of disease, disability and death in the United States. An

estimated 28.3 million US adults smokes cigarettes and about 4.7 million middle and high-

school students use at least one tobacco product, including e-cigarettes. Every day, about

1,600 US, nearly half a million Americans die from prematurely of smoking or exposure

second hand smoke. Another 16 million live with a serious illness caused by smoking. Each

year the United States spends more than $225 billion dollars on medical care to treat smoke-

related disease in adults.

6
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE:

To examine the facts surrounding the harmful impact of smoking in a human body. To make

recommendations to reduce the harmful effects of smoking in a population of Trinidad and

Tobago, especially the younger generation.

7
METHODOLOGY:

The method that was used is a questionnaire where our group members put each other’s ideas

and questions into a file to share with the population we seeked for answers. With this

questionnaire, we accumulated numerical data and statistics with each answer from (73)

young teenage individual respondents. The information which was gathered was based on

whether smoking interest them and whether they agreed or disagreed on how smoking can be

detrimental to their health.

ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION OF DATA:

According to the survey given to the young individuals, the vast majority of the teenage

respondents are not interested in smoking, six (6) of them are very interested in smoking,

twenty- six (26) of the responders have some interest in smoking cigarettes and forty-one (41)

of the responders were not interested in indulging the habit of smoking. After that, the survey

showed the statistics of the least people who agreed and most of the people who disagreed if

smoking is not dangerous for your lungs. Two (2) people agreed and seventy- one people (71)

disagreed that smoking is not harmful for your lungs.

10
CONCLUSION:

The more you smoke, it becomes a habit or an addiction. A habit of smoking leads to many

dangers healthwise. Smoking is lethal in every organ in the body, especially your lungs.

Studies show people who are heavy smokers have a decreased life expectancy. Also, second

hand smoke exposure contributes to over 40,000 deaths among non-smoking adults and 400

deaths in infants each year. Second hand smoke also causes stroke, lung cancer, and coronary

heart disease in adults. Children who are exposed to second-hand smoke are at increased risk

for sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections and middle ear disease.

11
RECOMMENDATIONS:

People who smoke can stop their habit or craving of smoking. There are many ways to quit

smoking cigarettes or tobacco. They can start off by exercising. Exercise distracts you from

wanting to smoke, these include walking, running or joining the gym. Next, getting into

relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques is a practice to lower your stress from your

body, you can start doing these techniques by meditating or doing yoga. Nicotine patches can

also assist a smoker to wean off the cigarette cravings, though this may be costly. Lastly,

smokers can join counselling classes for therapy to overcome the addiction, this way they

meet other past addicts who quit smoking and opt for a much healthier lifestyle.

12
REFLECTION:

Receiving the results from the teenagers who were the test subjects was easy. Since my

teammates and I picked a good topic, it was wonderful and quite informative. I was thinking

about getting adults who smoke as subjects, though challenging, it would become more

intriguing if they were added to answer the questionnaires. Regardless of what age people

are, smoking will inevitably be hazardous to the self and the environment.
