The key difference between linear and nonlinear text is their reading path. In a linear
text, a reader can make sense of the text by reading sequentially, from beginning to the
end. However, in a nonlinear text, the reading path is nonlinear and non-sequential; thus,
the reader can choose his own reading path.
A nonlinear text comes with images or represented in the form of a diagram such as
a concept map and other graphic organizers.
Ideas laid out in a Concept Map or other Graphic Organizers may be organized into a Linear text.
The water cycle shows the Path that water takes to enter and leaves the earth
atmosphere..It involves different processes, namely evaporation, transpiration, condensation and
precipitation; and from the oceans, lakes, streams, and other bodies of water through evaporation.
This water turns into water vapor which through the process of condensation, turns into drpolets
which form the clouds. Water from the clouds fall back to erath as rain and other forms of
precipitation. Some of the water enters the soil as groundwater. Some collects as runoff water
that travels to other bodies of water.
This flow of water continues as a cycle.
A linear version of a nonlinear txt can improve and enrich understanding of ideas or
concepts presented in images, diagrams and other visual models. Therefore, when writing an
article or write up of a non linear text, it is essential that the ideas in both texts match. You must
remember the following:
Using books or online references, find images showing any of the following natural cycles or
processes and make your own illustration or diagram of the cycle or process you have chosen.
