t’s so very easy to see the symptoms of bad quality
sleep-you look tired, dark undereye circles and a dull
complexion. The body perceives loss of sleep, or lack
of quality of sleep as stress and these stress signals not
only cause breakouts, but also make skin less capable of
retaining moisture and it slows down skin cell turnover.
Good quality sleep is essential to waking up energized and
alert, you also wake up looking and feeling more beautiful.
Beauty sleep is a real thing.
When we sleep our stress hormone (cortisol) goes down and
our sleep hormone (melatonin) goes up. The body, and the
skin, are in restorative repair mode. When we sleep, the skin is
busy repairing from damage accumulated from the day - UV
rays and pollution. Studies have shown new skin cells grow
faster while the body sleeps. When we sleep the skin’s clock
turns backwards, another incentive to get to bed earlier.
Sleep is also needed for protein synthesis of the hair, and it
can impact the hormones, which will also have an impact on
hair growth.
We are all very aware that screen time has a direct impact
on our production of melatonin, otherwise known as the
hormone of darkness, which is produced in the brain’s
pineal gland and requires darkness to run its course and
induce sleepiness. Melatonin doesn’t like light, especially
the blue kind emitted by our phones and computers.

In fact, continuation of this type of lighting before bed
does eventually disrupt our internal clock. This not only
compromises the quantity and quality of sleep but can also
disrupt the body’s digestive system. Your bedroom should
not be connected to work, socializing and stress. Instead, it
should be connected to a calm place to wind down and relax
and eventually get your healthy beauty sleep.
The excuse of needing your phone in your bedroom to
wake you up in the morning is not a good enough reason to
justify keeping the phone in your bedroom, be honest with
yourself. Get yourself an old-style alarm clock, no blue light
no interruptions from texts, no radiation. After a very short
space of time, you really will see and feel the health benefits
of keeping all electrical gadgets out of your bedroom.
With some alarm clocks you can wake up to the sound of
your choice-the sound of birds, the sea, church bells, wake
up refreshed the way you want to wake up. Go for silk

skin creasing and wrinkles. Keeping hair away from the face

Ockenden Manor is a charming Elizabethan manor house nestled away in the
village of Cuckfield in the West Sussex countryside. With its close accessibility
to London, it is the perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet away from
the city.
On arriving at the hotel, I noticed the warm, earthly autumnal colours of the
beautiful gardens surrounding. A short time later I was greeted by a friendly
staff member who offered me a cup of tea in the drawing room before taking
me over to the spa to indulge in some much-needed ‘me’ time.
As part of the Spa experience, I started with just over ten minutes in the
steam room to warm up and begin the detoxification process. I then enjoyed
some fresh air as I relaxed in the hot tub outside before going into the sauna
to open my pores ready for my first treatment.
With treatments available that range from light therapy and floats in the
isopod, to manicures and pedicures, body scrubs, and a variety of massages
and facials, I started with an hour of the Five Element Aroma Massage. It
was an aromatherapy massage blending customised oil infusions with hot
stones and warm towels to provide a truly relaxing experience. The therapist
suggested wood for rejuvenation, fire for zest, earth for balance, metal for
detoxifying or water to soothe. The massage used a combination of both
Eastern and Western massage and thermotherapy techniques to help bring
balance to the body and mind. The hour passed faster than I would have
liked as the therapist focused on my upper back and shoulders during the
massage – it is where the tension from daily life accumulates the most in my
body.
After the massage, I had a thirty-minute botanical booster facial that began
with a deep cleanse and exfoliation to eliminate toxins and decongest the
pores. A mask was then applied to my face while the therapist gave me
a truly relaxing head massage. At the end of the treatment, the therapist
applied some nourishing products which gave me a glowing complexion.
I love the fact that Ockenden Manor uses all-natural ingredients in the
products for their treatments while the staff provided a high standard of
techniques and skills during my treatments. To end my experience, I enjoyed
the jacuzzi for a further twenty minutes before having a light lunch in the
restaurant before making my way back to London.
Ockenden Manor offers a variety of spa days that are curated to ensure
guests get the most from their experience. They have a choice of wonderful
treatments to ensure you feel relaxed with a restored sense of vitality, giving
you the option to enjoy afternoon tea or some lunch with some of their
packages if you are feeling a little more indulgent. They are well-known for
their meditation and yoga retreats and experiences and it is the perfect place
to do this especially when combined with some of the many walks in the
Cuckfield area and a visit to one or more of the nearby vineyards.
The quality of Sussex wines is excellent with large areas of vines in cultivation
for over twenty years growing premium quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and
Pinot Meunier grapes along with Seyval Blanc and more recently, Bacchus,
Ortega, Chasselas and Merlot. Three local award-winning vineyards where
you can enjoy wine tasting and have a delicious accompanying lunch are
Bolney Wine, Ridgeview Wine Estate and Bluebell Vineyard Estate.
One recommended yoga experience is the three-day transformational yoga
retreat run by Meg Thompson, a local Sussex teacher, trained in Bali and
who has been running classes in the area since 2014 with each class having
an infused scent to enhance the relaxation experience for all your senses.
A yoga retreat will leave you feeling energised, re-focused and with a new
sense of calm and serenity. A yoga retreat is an option to consider allowing
you to enjoy a mix of energising daily and tranquil evening candle-lit
sessions and includes dreamy isopod floatation.

T
he benefits of thermal spa treatments for
wellness have been known since ancient
times. During the Roman Empire, Roman
legionaries began using hot springs for
medical purposes when Emperor Marcus
Aurelius discovered that the wounds of his
soldiers healed a lot faster when they bathed in the natural
spring water of the hot springs. This new-found knowledge
about the benefits of balneotherapy spread quickly in the
community as bathing at thermal baths became a social
experience for everyone. Other civilisations also used water

as a healing practice with Egyptians and Israelites plunging
themselves in the Nile and the River Jordan to reap the
healing and disease-protecting benefits cold water provides.
Thermal spa treatments are either regularly incorporated
into people’s routines or enjoyed as a luxury when time
and money allow it. Heat treatments can help warm the
muscles and prepare skin for products that will be applied
onto the face or body in treatments that may follow, as
well as enhance wellbeing by increasing and decreasing
the temperature of the body in a particular way. Benefits
provided by heat treatment range from helping reduce

SAUNA AND SANARIUM

STEAM ROOM
Steam rooms are wet with a tropical feel to them with their
moist air. The temperature is usually up to 50 degrees Celsius
with humidity of 80-100%.
Like a sauna, the steam room causes the core temperature of
the body to rise leading to the release of toxins and benefits
listed above. The key difference between the two is the
levels of humidity, therefore a steam room can be extremely
beneficial for those who suffer from coughs and lung
problems as it helps create good respiratory conditions. The
higher humidity of a steam room also means that they are
more hydrating for the skin than saunas.
ICE CAVE OR FOUNTAIN
An ice cave or fountain provides a refreshing experience
providing an instant feeling of wellbeing. It is best to finish
a session with the ice cave or fountain as it will help balance
body temperature and blood pressure, by intervening with the
sweating process ensuring there is not too much stress placed
on the body after the hot treatments. This type of cold-water
therapy helps strengthen the immune system, stimulates
blood circulation and promotes the elimination of toxins.

an extra element as they allow the therapist to ease into the
muscle tissue at a deeper level while applying less pressure

the mind. Nothing has more control over us than that which
forces us to pay attention. And everything that we give our
attention to, whether voluntary or involuntary influences us.
This only becomes a problem when you are not aware of
what you value in life or what deserves your attention. When
this is the case, you give your energy to unimportant things
that can leave you feeling drained. You only have so much
bandwidth that you can use so you need to consciously
decide where your energy resources are being used. If your
life is not going where you want it to go, it may be good for
you to do a mental detox to clear out the garbage and gain
clarity. After all, you can’t pour from an empty vessel.
Hitting a roadblock is normal when it comes to making some
decisions - there is a tendency to get trapped in our own
heads rather than following our intuition. In this instance,
it can feel like continuous streams of thoughts flood our
consciousness as we find ourselves struggling to articulate
in words how we feel because maybe we don’t understand
our thoughts, what is driving them, causing them, and how
to deal with them. It can be frustrating, especially as we look
around at the constant flow of information through media
sources that may lead us to compare our lives to those of
others. It can cause us to question what we really need and
want in our lives.
Working in the wellness industry can add to this stress as we
are continually dealing with other people’s problems. It takes
both our emotional and physical energy as we put our needs
aside to accommodate client’s needs and wants so they
feel good. During this time at work, we will unconsciously
absorb energy from our clients and colleagues - and this has
the power to either energise or drain us. For some people
who work in wellness a passion can slowly turn into a job
that pays the bills or it may be that work brings you joy and
contentment, but your personal relationships, homelife,
finances or health is causing stress and stealing your joy.
It is easy to stay in a state of comfortable unhappiness no
matter how painful or unfulfilling it is because our mind’s
number one job is to ensure we survive so unless you do
reflect on your circumstances, it’s likely to convince you that
it’s okay to keep things the way they are. For the most primal
part of your brain, no change equals safety. But at what cost?
We have been conditioned by society to think it’s okay to
be stressed, it’s okay to be unsatisfied in the workplace, and

to just look forward to the weekends or the holidays – in
simple terms, escape the life we have built for ourselves.
It is not until you start to value yourself and believe you
deserve happiness that you will start making decisions
intentionally that align with your core values. And it will be a
series of small decisions and actions that contribute to more
noticeable changes in your life.
Here are a few simple ways to help detox your mind:
JOURNALING
Journaling can be a healthy way to express yourself if you are
struggling with overwhelming emotions. When you feel like
your thoughts are jumbled, grab a notebook and write down
what comes naturally to you at that point in time. It doesn’t
need to make sense as you dump the thoughts in your mind
onto the paper. This is a wonderful tool to help reduce stress,
manage anxiety and cope with difficult times by allowing
you to reflect on experiences in your life. It can also allow you
to identify triggers contributing to stress and anxiety, so you
can later work out a plan to solve your problems.
SPEND TIME IN NATURE
Go for a walk in the park, woodland or at the beaches close
to your home and reap the health and wellness benefits that
nature provides. Look around and notice the subtle changes
that come with the changing of seasons – this will help with
grounding and may inspire new ideas as you allow your
mind to wander freely. It is nice to go alone, but if you are
struggling for motivation in the winter, ask a friend to join.
LIMIT TECHNOLOGY
Constantly checking your phone and scrolling through posts
on social media can make you feel drained. Next time you are
out at dinner or at an event, interact with the people around
you and enjoy every moment instead of feeling the need to
share what you’re up to.
EXERCISE
Get out of your head and into your body. Go for a swim, sign
up for a dance class, head to your local gym, or just move
your body in a way you enjoy. Exercising will improve your
mental health and boost your cognitive function, making it
easier for you to focus.
BECOME SOCIALLY SELECTIVE
Who you spend your time with and connect with can have a
huge impact on your health and wellbeing. As we grow older,
our motives when forming relationships generally move from
that of knowledge acquisition and novelty to relationships
that provide us with emotional gratification and support.
Invest in a few deep-rooted friendships with people who
understand your quirks and passions. You should be able
to be your authentic self without the pressure of moulding
yourself into somebody you are not for social acceptance.
GOOD NUTRITION
A Mediterranean diet full of fruit and vegetables, fish, and
healthy fats provides the brain with the building blocks for
proper functioning. Being mindful of what you are putting
into your body can help improve mood, increase cognitive
function, and reduce stress levels.

SPEND A DAY BY YOURSELF
A lot of people feel uncomfortable by the thought of
spending a day by themselves, but it is the perfect
opportunity to grab coffee at your favourite café, get a
massage, visit an exhibition that has been on your mind,
or sign up for that live drawing class in your area. It opens
you up to meet new people and can help you get to know
yourself better.
MEDITATE
Meditation is commonly used as a complementary therapy
to promote relaxation and reduce stress. During meditation,
you focus your attention to help eliminate unnecessary
thoughts that pop into your mind, helping you to stay
centred and feel at peace.
SLEEP
A good night of sleep can work wonders for your mood.
While you sleep, your brain heals and strengthens certain
connections, improving memory, attention span, and your
overall outlook on life. If you struggle to doze off, try taking
a hot bath infused with essential oils and listening to some
relaxing music to calm your mind.
IN SUMMARY
Being well, wellness, is as much about knowing your
limits and boundaries as it is about seeking out new and
interesting experiences. It is about creating the space in your
life to devote to your wellness - your source of energy and

limits and leaving capacity to deal with what life throws at
you. Having no space and capacity can quickly create stress.

record $5.6 trillion—and it’s forecast to hit
$8.5 trillion by 2027. New Global Wellness
Institute research reveals a wellness market
surging post-pandemic: growing 12%
annually since 2020 and reaching a 14%
higher value than the previous record year of 2019.
How has the global wellness economy fared since the
massive economic shocks of the pandemic?
According to a new report released today by the non-profit
Global Wellness Institute (GWI)—the only authoritative,
comprehensive source of wellness market data—the industry
has made one powerful recovery. If the market was worth
a record $4.9 trillion in 2019, and then shrank 11% to $4.4
trillion in the pandemic year of 2020, the research indicates
that the wellness economy has seen recent, economy-
defying momentum. It grew 27% since 2020 to reach $5.6
trillion, with 7 of the 11 wellness sectors now surpassing their
2019, pre-pandemic values. With consumers, the medical
world, and governments now placing a much bigger value
on prevention and wellness, the GWI forecasts that the
wellness economy will grow at an impressive 8.6% annual
pace through 2027, when the market will reach $8.5 trillion—
nearly double its 2020 size.
“We are surprised by the resiliency of the global wellness
economy, and how quickly it has bounced back from the
pandemic. It has exceeded our own expectations and
forecasts,” said Katherine Johnston, GWI senior research
fellow. “If the pandemic disrupted industry momentum in the
short term, it has simultaneously created a dramatic shift in
the long-term opportunities and trajectory for wellness.”
“The Global Wellness Economy 2023” is packed with insights:
numbers and analysis for all 11 wellness sectors, regional
data, the top-20 national markets for each wellness sector,
while exploring the major shifts and trends that will impact
each wellness market in the future.
The GWI has announced it will now release a Global Wellness
Economy Report annually, at each Global Wellness Summit.
Its “Country Rankings Report,” companion research providing
market size, rankings, analysis, and per capita wellness

While wellness tourism and spas, hit hard by the pandemic,
saw the biggest annual growth rates from 2020 to 2022 (36%
and 22%), an even better metric is the extent to which each
sector has grown from its pre-pandemic level. Seven of 11
wellness markets have surpassed their 2019 market size, with
five sectors showing the strongest resilience and growth: 1)
wellness real estate (177% of 2019 level); 2) public health,
prevention and personalized medicine (171% of 2019); 3)
mental wellness (139% of 2019); 4) healthy eating, nutrition
and weight loss (118% of 2019); and 5) physical activity
(111% of 2019). GWI predicts that full recovery for the slightly
lagging sectors of wellness tourism, spas and hot springs will
be swift given pent-up demand: wellness tourism and spas
will surpass their 2019 value by year-end 2023; hot springs by
2024.
Wellness markets in all global regions have fully recovered
from the pandemic, but North America (123% of 2019
market), Middle East-North Africa (119% of 2019), and Europe
(114% of 2019), have shown the most powerful growth rates
since 2019. In 2022, as countries in Asia suffered prolonged
disruptions and lockdowns, North America (now a $1.9
trillion market) surpassed Asia-Pacific ($1.7 trillion market) as
the largest regional wellness economy. These two regions,
along with Europe ($1.5 trillion market), now make up 90% of
the entire wellness market. Per capita spending on wellness is
much higher in North America ($5,108) and Europe ($1,596)
than elsewhere.

spending and the global economy over the next five years,
growing at a robust annual rate of 8.6%, substantially
higher than the projected global GDP growth of 5.1% (IMF
forecasts). It will reach $6.3 trillion by year-end 2023 and
$7.4 trillion in 2025, on its march toward $8.5 trillion in 2027,
when it will represent 6.6% of global GDP (vs. 5.6% in 2022).
The biggest projected wellness growth leaders through
2027 are: 1) wellness real estate (17.4% annually); 2) wellness
tourism (16.6% annually); 3) thermal/mineral springs (14.3%
annually); and 4) mental wellness (12.8% annually). The
unusually high future growth rates for wellness tourism
and thermal/mineral springs reflect a period of continued
recovery from 2023-2025. GWI projects that four wellness
sectors (personal care & beauty; healthy eating, nutrition
& weight loss; physical activity; and wellness tourism) will
exceed $1 trillion in market size by 2024. Three sectors will
exceed half a trillion dollars in 2024: wellness real estate;
traditional & complementary medicine; and public health,
prevention, and personalized medicine. Healthy eating,
nutrition & weight loss will leapfrog beauty to become
the largest wellness market by 2025. Wellness real estate
will enter the top five sectors in 2025 and will explode
from a $398 billion market in 2022 to $887.5 billion in

The Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel Spa is a beach hotel and spa
located in the middle of Portugal’s Southern Atlantic Coast just east of
the city of Albufeira. Accessible in a short journey from Faro International
Airport, it is a perfect place to relax, be pampered, explore the local area and
rejuvenate yourself.
The hotel resort is highly rated for cleanliness, location and value and offers
a range of accommodation of ocean view rooms, apartments and villas. All
have access to the golden beach of Santa Eulália alongside restaurants and
7 outdoor pools, one of them heated. The hotel is fully accessible with easy
paths and ramps.
The resort is highly commended with recent awards in 2022 from Traveller
Review and Kayak Travel. It is a twenty-minute walk or five-minute drive to
Albufeira centre and beach with restaurants, Praia da Oura and nightlife at
‘the Strip’. The temperatures are pleasant throughout the year ranging from
a warm 28 degrees Celsius in summer months down to 18 degrees Celsius in
winter.
Albufeira was originally established as a fishing village, and this is still very
much at the heart of the city with Atlantic seafood landing daily and served
fresh in the restaurants alongside Piri-Piri and other spicy dishes for which
the area is renowned.
I viewed my visit as a coastal therapy experience with the healing effects
of clean sea air accompanying the sounds of crashing Atlantic waves. It is
a dangerous coastline with cliffs and rocky areas so be careful and follow
lifeguard signage and avoid unsupervised swimming. A boat trip to see
dolphins may be something you would like to consider as there are often
schools of dolphins off the coast.
At the resort is a Thalassotherapy Spa. This is integral to the ocean beside
me and I booked an afternoon there with their 80-minute signature package
‘Live your best life ritual’. Thalassotherapy means Ocean in Greek and popular
since the 19th Century. A spa located by the Ocean that incorporates the
natural healing and health benefits of the sea in the therapies.
I felt ready to try the therapy after having relaxed in the morning with a
pastry and coffee by the beach, followed by a walk in the gentle golden
sand as I took in the mineral-rich sea air. Being at ease with the ocean is a
state which I recommend you give yourself time to settle into before a spa
Thalassotherapy session.
The spa area I entered had a heated circuit of Atlantic Ocean water with five
stations of hydromassage jets and air bubbles.
I began moving through the stations conditioning my muscles, loving the
different sensations of water on my body. I have always loved being in the
water and as a former elite triathlete, I appreciate the recovery benefits that
water provides.
For anyone thinking about this, seawater and associated Thalassotherapy
treatments are recommended to aid your joints, recovery from strokes,
arthritis, skin problems, stress relief and general wellbeing. What’s more, the

ankles. During pregnancy blood flow to the legs is slow, so it
is important to refrain from performing deep tissue massage
to avoid blood clots, instead opting for long, light strokes.
Shiatsu, deep pressure points and reflexology should also be
avoided when it comes to massaging pregnant women to
avoid potential risks. Aromatherapy adds an extra element
to a massage with soothing smells ranging from lavender
through to eucalyptus. When it comes to using essential oils
for prenatal massage the National Association for Holistic
Aromatherapy suggests diluting the essential oil in a carrier

client following a massage may be directly connected to the

experienced, and insured to carry out a prenatal massage
there is no reason why you can’t provide all the benefits a
normal massage can provide plus more to a client. They will
probably leave your treatment room feeling more relaxed
and optimistic with heightened levels of feel-good hormones
serotonin and oxytocin.
FACIALS
Most clients will report a significant change in their skin
as a cocktail of hormones flows through their body when
pregnant. Some will report an improvement as more blood
flows to the surface causing a natural glow, while others
will be experiencing more outbreaks. It is important to note
that the skin of your client will be a lot more sensitive when
they are pregnant, therefore refrain from performing harsher
treatments like microdermabrasion and chemical peels.
Offer them more gentle options that may include a deep
cleansing facial to exfoliate or moisturise, an oxygen facial
that will improve blood circulation and reduce fine lines, or a
hydrating facial to give them a dewy complexion. Ask them
questions, assess their skin, and suggest what type of facial
will work best for their skin at this stage of their journey.
Ensure the products you use when performing the facial
treatments are toxin-free and safe for the client and the baby.
Avoid beta hydroxy acid in any treatments which may be
harmful to the baby and opt for more natural sources such as
alpha hydroxy acid which is derived from sugar cane or other

Hair grows rapidly when women are pregnant so they will

control. If they are undergoing laser treatment, it is best to
advise postponing the rest of the course until the baby is
delivered. Luckily, waxing and threading are safe options
during pregnancy so you can suggest these to clients.
As a therapist, you may need to adjust the position of your
client slightly during treatment. Having smooth skin feels
amazing and if your client feels that little bit sexier after
treatment it’s all worth it.

WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY NO NO?
I don’t do plumping creams. I would be afraid that after
plumping your skin you would look worse once it had worn
off! I also don’t do AHAs because they thin the skin.
IF YOU COULD ONLY HAVE ONE VEGETABLE FOR
A YEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Chickpeas! For hummus, for padding out curries and soups,
for healthy fats and for protein.
HOW DO YOU RELAX AFTER A LONG BUSY DAY?
I have a long commute. One of the best gifts I ever got from
my husband was a Spotify subscription, (I do have an issue
with how much they pay their artists per stream – but that
is for another day!) I have a nicely developing playlist of 11
hours of music (at the moment) which I play on rotation in
the car. This is a great mood boost. As well as that, I find a
good, healthy, hearty meal always helps, before you get up
and get started again. It takes a lot of self-motivation and
mind over matter to get me to the gym, but I do love going
swimming with my husband, sitting in the bubbles/water jets
and using the steam room. I always feel better after it, and I
never regret going. My muscles are looser, the steam helps
with my sinuses, and I get to release any pent-up stresses
from the day. If it is a luxury you can afford – go for it. A bath
can work well too though! (The other bubbles I have a soft
spot for is prosecco! I find them very relaxing.)
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR DAILY WELLBEING ACTS
FOR YOURSELF?
Taking off my make-up before bed and massaging bio-oil
into my face, neck and shoulders. I hold a lot of tension
in my neck, and as a teacher, I spend a lot of time on my

laptop preparing classes, so I have an old lavender seed
bag that I stick into the microwave for a few minutes and
put around my neck. It’s like a mini spa treatment! Oil for
the skin (at nighttime) is one of the best treatments. I also
have a cup of lemon and ginger tea with a spoon of honey
when I get into bed, lemon and honey for the voice, and
ginger for the warm, fuzzy feeling!
WHAT IS THE BEST BEAUTY ADVICE YOU HAVE
BEEN GIVEN?
Brushing your hair in the shower after putting on loads of
conditioner. I can’t be dealing with the knots afterwards!!!!
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON SUSTAINABLE
BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
I think it has to be the way forward. Visually, I would be
attracted to clever and colourful packaging, but when
you know that plastic can only be recycled a few times
before it is forever in the landfill, it makes you realise that
this can’t go on. Cost is one reason that people opt for the
non-sustainable option! You should not be out of pocket,
because you care about the environment. The government
needs to give us, and the market, an incentive financially. I
have switched over to bamboo sanitary products – I couldn’t
bring myself to throw any more plastic pads into the bin! I
try to buy products in glass instead of plastic.
