BIOGRAPHY: Corazon Cojuangco was born into a wealthy, politically prominent family based in Tarlac
province, north of Manila. She graduated from Mount St. Vincent College in New York City in 1954 but
abandoned further studies in 1955 to marry Benigno Simeon Aquino, Jr., who was then a promising young
politician.

POLITICAL HISTORY: Philippine political leader who served as the first female president (1986–92) of the
Philippines, restoring democratic rule in that country after the long dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.

Economic Social Political

As someone who inspired a nation to
finally get a hold of its economic fate,
wrestling it from those who for decades
buried us among the swamp cabbage
patches, waylaid among the thickets and
tall grass where we found ourselves in
1986, Cory Aquino took distinct and
definitive steps to return the economy to a
path of growth. She did more than negate
the immediate past.
She was the first female president of the
Philippines. As president, Aquino oversaw
the drafting of the 1987 Constitution,
which limited the powers of the
presidency and re-established the
bicameral Congress, removing the
previous dictatorial government structure.
On February 25, 1986, Aquino assumed
the position of president of the
Philippines. As president, she considered
free secondary school as one of her
greatest accomplishments. During her
time in office, the "God Save the Queen"
coup attempt was made, along with many
calls for resignation. Aquino also led the
Philippines through the 1990 earthquake,
the 1991 super typhoon Thelma, and the
1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo.
