SUMMARY

The utmost concern of the Philippine schools and educational managers for
many decades is the deteriorating performance of the students in all subject areas,
mainly English, Mathematics, and Science, wherein the English language is used.
Philippine education took a step toward making a milestone by implementing the K
to 12 curricula in response to the demand for 21st-century teaching and to
respond to the problem of decreasing performance of Filipinos academically. This
implementation aimed to produce holistically developed Filipino with 21st-century
skills, including the acquisition of practical communication skills that focus on
using English in communication (DepEd Official Gazette).

In response, the Bulac National High School continuously works on

improving all students' reading skills. However, the unforeseen pandemic impedes
the continuous implementation of reading activities in the school intended for
Grade 7 to Grade 12 students. This paper covers the accomplishment of the
reading assessment and reading enhancement activities in the school year 2021-
2022.

PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY

The overall purpose of the activity is to develop an effective reading activity

or program that will help improve the students' reading level.

OBJECTIVES

(1) Recognize the three keys to successful reading enrichment activity.

(a) Team Work and Coordination of Language Teachers
(b) Cooperation and Assistance of Parents and Guardians
(c) Active participation of students
(2) Provide effective reading enrichment activity.
(3) Develop a reading program/strategy that can improve
students’ reading ability.

METHODOLOGY

The reading assessment and reading enrichment activity was conducted quarterly.
Reading enrichment activity were administered as per Reading Remediation
Schedule per grade level.

As part of the reading month celebration during Modular Distance Learning,

the school extends its program by conducting reading assessments in the distance
learning setup. Students are guided by their parents/guardians while reading the
text lifted from the Phil-Iri package. Meanwhile, a recorded performance was sent to
teachers to prove and assess the students' reading ability level. The students also
answered comprehension questions after reading the text. A face-to-face reading
assessment was conducted at school in which selected students in Grade 7 to
Grade 10 were invited. The face-to-face reading assessment activity strictly followed
the minimum health protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.
The assessment tool used to determine their reading level is adopted from
the Phil-IRI Package as to FRUSTRATION level, where scores obtained are from 1-7,
INSTRUCTIONAL level scores are from 8-13, and INDEPENDENT level scores
obtained are from 14-20.
The teachers interpreted the results of the reading assessments to have more
reading activities and reading tests to enhance the reading skills and performances
of Grade 7 and Grade 8 students, respectively. A quarterly reading assessment will
monitor the students' reading levels. Through this, teachers can determine if the
reading enhancement activities were effectively working with the students in
frustration level.

In response to the results of the 1st quarter reading assessment, the

teachers started to conduct reading enhancement activities by providing reading
materials to Grade 7 to Grade 10 students in a modular setup. The students are
given reading activities per Reading Remediation schedule, measuring their reading
speed and, most importantly, their comprehension competence. The teachers
prepared the reading materials and ensured that the text applied to their grade
level.
Parents and guardians guided and assisted their children in performing the
task since the teacher was not around to monitor. Some parents were also invited
to discuss the status of the reading level of their child. The teacher explained that it
is high time to build strong connections and collaboration with them to help their
child improve their reading ability. The parents were encouraged to help their
children read

The teachers discuss with the parents the status of their child's reading level.
Also, ask for their cooperation to extend assistance to guide and encourage their
child to make reading a habit.

In the third quarter, the assessment was conducted physically. It

shows that the student's physical presence in the school significantly
impacts their reading performance. The assistance and guidance of the
teachers essentially helped students when undergoing reading enrichment
activities.
The data gathered is based on the third reading assessment done
physically. There is a decrease in the number of learners under frustration
level. The reading materials provided and administered by the
teachers/advisers helped decrease the number of students in frustration
level. Regular reading activities conducted are another factor in improving
their speed in reading and comprehension ability. However, practice in the

comprehension ability is highly needed for a better understanding of the
reading materials.

The result of the 4th quarter reading assessment gives the impression that
there is a significant improvement in the reading ability among Grade 7 to Grade
12 students who are under face-to-face classes. Only those who are under modular
distance learning were identified in frustration level. The teachers provide the same
reading enrichment activities for face-to-face and modular distance learning. The
teacher infers that lack of guidance and assistance when studying at home affects
why the student did not show much improvement in reading and comprehension
skills.
