INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Lesson 1

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

PHYSICAL SCIENCE - is the study of the inorganic world. That is, it does not study living things. (Those
are studied in biological, or life, science.) The four main branches of physical science are astronomy, physics,
chemistry, and the Earth sciences, which include meteorology and geology.

BRANCHES OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE

ASTRONOMY - is the study of everything in the universe beyond

Earth's atmosphere. That includes objects we can see with our naked
eyes, like the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and the stars. It also includes
objects we can only see with telescopes or other instruments, like
faraway galaxies and tiny particles.

CHEMISTRY- is the study of matter, analyzing its structure, properties and

behavior to see what happens when they change in chemical reactions. As
such, it can be considered a branch of physical science, alongside
astronomy, physics and earth sciences including geology.

PHYSICS - branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of

matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that
of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other
radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.

GEOLOGY- The word geology means 'Study of the Earth'. Also known as
geoscience or earth science, Geology is the primary Earth science and
looks at how the earth formed, its structure and composition, and the
types of processes acting on it.

METEOROLOGY- is the science dealing with the atmosphere and its

phenomena, including both weather and climate.

OCEANOGRAPHY - is the study of all aspects of the ocean.

Oceanography covers a wide range of topics, from marine life and
ecosystems to currents and waves, the movement of sediments, and
seafloor geology.
