Mental and Emotional Health

Reading is Learning

Health is often related to physical wellbeing of an individual. Little do people know that
health is more than looking healthy. As what we have learned in the previous modules, health
has various dimensions: physical, emotional, mental, social, moral-spiritual and
environmental. Aside from looking healthy, an individual must also be feeling, thinking and
interacting healthy to achieve wellness. This module will focus on your mental and emotional
health. It will help you be aware of how your health is affected with the way you think and feel.
The concept of mental and emotional will be discussed and you will find out that any imbalance
in your mental and emotional health may result to stress. Stress as a response of the body to
a certain event or experience has many sources: family, friends, school and community.

Mental and Emotional Health

Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects
how we think, feel and act. It also helps to determine how we handle stress relate to others
and make choices. Mental health is important at a very stage of life from childhood and
adolescent through adulthood. In contrast Emotional Health involves ability to manage and
express emotions that arise from what you have learned and experienced.
Mental and/or emotional health is the ability to accept yourself and others, express and
manage emotions, and deal with the demands and challenges you meet in your life.

others, Can cope with a variety of feelings and situation.

3

Factors Affecting the Promotion of Good Mental Health

Most people at some point feel worried stressed or even down about things that are
going in their lives. These factors can either pose a risk to, or protect, your mental and well-
being. Good mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness. It can be seen as
a state of mental health that allows one to flourish and fully enjoy life. Everyone experienced
down times in life. The ability to cope with negative experiences down times in life. The ability
to cope with negative experience varies greatly from one person to another and, in large part,
determines whether people enjoy their lives. Some of the factors that affect the mental health
of youth are as follows:

Self - Esteem

This is value on ourselves, our positive self-image and self- worth. People with high
self-esteem generally have a positive outlook and are satisfied with themselves most of the
time.

Feeling loved

Children who feel loved, trusted and accepted by their parents and others are far more
likely to have good self-esteem. They are also more likely to feel comfortable, safe and secure,
and are better able to communicate and develop positive relationship with others.

Confidence

You should be encouraged to discuss unique qualities and have the confidence to face
challenges and take risks. Young people who are brought up to have confidence to themselves
are more likely to have a positive attitude, and to lead happy and productive lives.

4
Family breakup or loss

Separation or divorce or the loss of a family member and loved one is extremely
painful. Finding ways to cope and adjust to the changes wrought by these events is critical for
everyone but particularly for youth. Improper way to handle grieve can affect young people’s
emotion negatively fin the future. If children are having difficulty in coping, professional help is
recommended.

Difficult behavior

When people are unhappy they either internalize their unhappiness or act out. The
latter usually appears as bad or difficult behavior such as using abusive language being
aggressive or violent damaging property, stealing, lying, refusing to comply with request or
expectations at school or home. If such behavior is serious and persistent the young person
and family might require professional help.

Physical ill health

Diseases acquires and other physical problems often contributed to poor mental health
and sometimes mental illness. Some physical circumstances (such as birth trauma, brain
injury or drug abuse) can directly cause brain damage chemistry and contribute to mental
illness. More commonly poor physical health can affect self-esteem and people’s ability to
meet their goals which leads to unhappiness or even depression in such cases, receiving the
best possible treatment for both the physical problem and the resulting psychological
consequences is key to optimal recovery to good mental health.

Abuse

Mentally abused children are at great risk. They are more likely to experience mental
disorders or mental illness during childhood and into adulthood. Abuse may be physical sexual
psychological or verbal. It may not always be evident or easily recognized. Regardless of the
form it takes, abuse cannot be tolerated. Children need to be protected from abuse and helped
to overcome its negative effects .Abuse can cause feelings of low self-esteem lack of self-
confidence ,depression ,isolation and anger – feelings that impair a child’s chance to lead a
happy life. Few children are able to recover on their own. Support is critical and professional
counselling is sometimes required. If abuse is discovered early the chances of a child returning
to a healthy state of mind and avoiding serious mental disorders are greatly enhanced.

Severe or long- term stress.

Stress is defined as psychological (or physical) and emotional responses to a

significant or unexpected change or disruption in one’s life. It may also refer to “what you feel
when you react to pressure either from the outside world (school, family and friends) or from
yourself.

5
There are two kinds of stress – eustress and distress

Eustress refers to a positive and healthy response of the body from stressor refers
to the things that make a person stressed. It produces good effects to one’s well-being. For
example a person who studied for long hours then took and got an outstanding grade in the
exam, may feel happiness and enjoyment. On the other hand distress refers to a negative
reaction of the body towards a given stressor. It may cause problems in health, alter the mood
and emotions, and even affect the way a person thinks. For example, when a person woke
up late for work, he or she may feel anger and disappointment.

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Maslow’s model helps us understand our

needs in some healthy ways that strengthens our mental and emotional health.

Level 5 – REACHING POTENTIAL – Need for self-actualization

Level 4 - FEELING RECOGNIZED – Need to achieved, need to be recognized
Level 3 – BELONGING – Need to love and be loved, need to belong.
