RIZA: The Sinulog sa Carmen celebration in the town of Carmen, Cebu, concluded
on January 28, 2024, marking the 51st anniversary of the festival.

This event was held a week after Cebu City's own Sinulog Grand Parade. Despite
conflicting claims about the origin of Sinulog, Carmen officials emphasized their
celebration as a genuine offering to the Holy Child, downplaying any sense of
competition with other Sinulog events.

In fact, a priest at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu clarified that the term
"Sinulog" initially referred to the Holy Child's fiesta before evolving into a formal
cultural event. According to Carmen's tourism officer, Tobias Maximino Villamor, the
festival originated as Ati-atihan in 1973, introduced by Fr. Jose Motus and later
renamed Sinulog under Mayor Virginio "Benyong" Villamor in 1974. The town's
celebration gained prominence when Cebu Province contingents chose Sinulog sa
Carmen over the Cebu City-organized event.

JENJEN : Up next, Mother arrested in Cebu for online exploitation of children

ISABEL: A 31-year-old Charissa Labajo was arrested for sexually exploiting her
children online.

NBI-7 agents arrested the woman during the serving of a Warrant to Search, Seize,
and Examine Computer Data in her home in Sitio Bulubugan, Barangay Tajao,
Pinamungajan on Thursday, February 1.

The woman is facing charges for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10175 or the
Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Child Pornography), RA 11930 or the Anti-
Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or
Exploitation Materials Act (Anti-OSAEC & Anti-CSAEM Act), RA 9208 as amended
by RA 10364 or the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Person Act of 2012, and RA 7610 or
Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.

The woman’s arrest came after the Homeland Security Investigation Office (US
Homeland) coordinated with the NBI after one “foreign client” was arrested.

KEN : It took time before the woman was traced as she used a different address
when transacting with clients. The NBI-7 finally tracked down the suspect’s
whereabouts with the use of a global positioning system.

Lastimoso said the suspect used Facebook, WhatsApp, and Skype, and collected at
least $50 (about P2,500) per sexual act done online.

The woman was reported to be a “high-volume producer and seller of child sexual
abuse and exploitation materials and who engages shamelessly in online child
sexual abuse and exploitation.”

The NBI-7 said the woman herself performs “live shows” to foreign clients and also
peddled her eight-year-old daughter by offering the minor’s explicit photos and videos
or child sexual abuse or exploitation materials.

The woman’s eight-year-old daughter and her 12-year-old son as well as the 15-
year-old niece of her lesbian partner had been turned over to social workers.

With the arrest of the suspect, the NBI-7 asked the public to help in the campaign
against sexual online abuses where minors are the usual target.

XHAIDEN: Open warfare': Philippines' Marcos-Duterte alliance crumbles

The Marcos and Duterte families joined forces in 2022 with Sara Duterte standing as
Marcos's vice-presidential running mate, allowing Marcos to tap the Duterte family's
huge support base and seal a comeback for the disgraced Marcos dynasty.
Marcos reversed Duterte's pro-China stance and pivoted back to the United States,
granting Washington greater access to Philippine bases amid China's assertiveness
in the South China Sea and near Taiwan.

Duterte essentially overturned a 2016 arbitral verdict that bolstered Manila's territory
claims in the South China Sea, regarded as a response to China's competing
sovereignty claims.

In November, Marcos expressed interest in re-joining the International Criminal

Court, causing significant strain on the partnership. In 2018, Duterte withdrew from
the court as the prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation into thousands of
deaths during his drug war.

RENZO: An investigation into Duterte's internationally-rebuked 'war on drugs' is

underway at the Hague-based tribunal.

Marcos has thrown his support behind moves to change the 1987 constitution, saying
it would ease regulations for business and lure investors, but Duterte has accused
him of using constitutional change to stay in power.

Duterte has warned Marcos might suffer the same fate as his father - who had to flee
the country - if he insisted on amending the constitution introduced after the 1986
revolution.

'OPEN WARFARE'

The alliance publicly disintegrated on Sunday when Duterte called Marcos a "drug
addict" during a rally against moves to change the charter. The rally was attended by
his daughter.

Marcos hit back, saying Duterte's fentanyl use, which the former leader admitted to
have used in the past for pain relief, could have clouded his judgment.
