Chief Minister's Assistance to Rescued Laborers
Context
● Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has given financial help of Rs 2 lakh each to four Odia laborers recently rescued from
a partially-collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand.
Key Points:
● The four workers, Raju Nayak, Dhiren Nayak, Bisheshwar Nayak, and Bhagaban Bhatra, reached Odisha from New
Delhi via a special flight.
● The Chief Minister welcomed them at his residence, inquiring about their well-being and listening to their 17-day-long
struggle inside the tunnel.
● Notably 5 workers from Odisha were saved from the tunnel.

Konark dance, sand art festivals inaugurated by CM


Context
Two flagship events of the Tourism department - the Konark festival and international sand art festival - were
inaugurated virtually by Chief Minister
Key points
● Konark Dance Festival is a five-day dance festival held every year in the month of December in the backdrop of the
Sun temple in Konark, Odisha in India.
● It is one of the biggest dance festivals held in Odisha
● The Sand festival celebrates sand sculptures produced by skilful sand artists.
● The International Sand Artist Festival celebrates the spectacular displays of sand artists from India and from many
other countries

Odisha’s Padampur Likely To Get District Status Soon


Context
● A high-level site selection committee visited Padampur town and identified three different lands for the construction of
a Collectorate for the proposed ‘Padampur district’
● The committee will submit its report to the Odisha Government, based on which the government will take a final call
about site selection for the proposed Padampur Collectorate.

Odisha Govt To Set Up New Medical College In Talcher


Context
A new medical college will come up in Angul district soon as the Odisha Government has approved setting up the Pabitra
Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital in the coal town Talcher.

● The state government has decided to provide supplementary online coaching to NEET and JEE aspirants pursuing their

Cabinet Nod For Amendment To Odisha Government Land Settlement Rules-1983


Context
● The State Cabinet approved a proposal of the Revenue & Disaster Management department to amend the Odisha
Government Land Settlement Rules-1983
● This will help resolve the long pending land issues of Puri Municipality and wasteland lease for homestead purposes in
Bhubaneswar and Jatni tehsils of Khurda district.

Odisha govt roadmap to boost sex ratio at birth


Context
Alarmed by low sex ratio at birth, the Odisha government has swung into action and prepared a roadmap to arrest the
declining trend and improve the situation
Key points
● The child sex ratio of Odisha has been showing a declining trend since 1961.
● While the number of women was 1,035 against 1,000 men in 1961, it declined to 1,020 in 1971, 995 in 1981, 967 in
1991, 953 in 2001 and 941 in 2011.
● The sex ratio in educated, comparatively developed and industrialised districts like Khurda, Balasore, Puri, Angul and
Jajpur is the lowest as compared to tribal districts.
● Several initiatives by the state government and the Centre, notwithstanding, the child sex ratio at birth declined from
932 in 2015-2016 to 894 in 2019-2021, as per the National Family Health Survey-5.

Cabinet okays logistics link from Gopalpur port


Context
● The state cabinet approved a proposal for development of a utility corridor between Gopalpur port and Tata Steel
Industrial Park at Gopalpur
● It was done at a cost of Rs 128.88 crore to provide logistics facilities for existing and upcoming industries.
Key points
● The cabinet also approved a special incentive package for Welspun Group’s projects at Choudwar in Cuttack and
Nilgungri in Sambalpur district.
● The projects with an investment of Rs 6,600 crore will create job opportunities for more than 20,000 people, revitalise
the textile industry, foster sustainable industrial growth and skill development.

Koraput gets affordable bus service
Context
● The Chief Minister launched affordable bus services in Koraput district, extending the facility to six districts in the first
phase.
● It is done under the Location Accessible Multimodal Initiative (LAccMI)
● Under the scheme,the state government plans to operate 1,623 buses in rural areas with a budget of Rs 3,178 crore.
● Earlier, the services were launched in the districts of Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Gajapati
district.

Chief Minister inaugurated a technology hub of Ernst & Young in Odisha capital
Key points
● Ernst & Young is a global leader in assurance, tax, strategy, transaction and consulting services.
● Its new technology hub in Bhubaneswar is the 15th such facility in India.
● It showcases the firm’s commitment to Odisha’s growing economic prowess and business landscape.
● The 15,000 sq ft state-of-the-art infrastructure at O-Hub, the expanded presence of EY in Bhubaneswar will create
opportunities for existing employees as well as enable the company to harness the potential talent from the technical
educational ecosystem in Odisha.

Daringbadi development
Context
● The state government has sanctioned `18 crore for the development of Daringbadi tourist site in Kandhamal district
● Daringbadi is considered the Kashmir of Odisha
● Every year the footfall of tourists is increasing at Daringbadi.

Centre Approves ODOP For Products Of All Districts In Odisha


Context
The Central government has approved One District One Product (ODOP) for all the districts of Odisha.
Key points
● The Ministry has approved ODOP for 713 districts in 35 States and Union Territories under the Pradhan Mantri
Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme.
● The districts have been included in ODOP on recommendations from respective state in consultation with the Ministry
of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
● Under ODOP, credit linked subsidy has been sanctioned for 12,024 micro food processing enterprises, 76 Incubation
Centres have been approved and 14 brands launched for marketing and branding support to micro food processing
units in the country.

CM sanctions Rs 15.2 crore for renovation of temples


Context
● Chief Minister sanctioned Rs 15.2 crore for the renovation of religious institutions and community projects in the
state capital.
● The amount will be utilised for renovation and repair of 507 such institutions in the Bhubaneswar north, Ekamra and
Bhubaneswar central Assembly constituencies of the city.

● Bhubaneswar is famous as a temple city as the city has more than 700 temples, including several ancient shrines.
● Thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit the places every day.
● The amount has been sanctioned keeping in view the need for beautification and improvement of all religious places
including ancient structures.

Foundation Stone For 2 Irrigation Projects


Context
● The Chief Minister inaugurated the left canal of Baitarani river under Anandpur barrage in Keonjhar district.
● He also laid the foundation stone for second phase work of Subarnarekha project.
● He also laid the foundation stone for a barrage over Khairi Bhandan river at Anlabani village in Mayurbhanj district.
● The 28-km canal connecting Baitarani and Salandi rivers will facilitate irrigation to 2,221 hectare (ha) of agricultural land
in Hatadihi and Anandpur blocks of the district.

Odisha Govt Asks Banks To Expedite Loans To SHGs


Context
● The Odisha government has asked the banks to expedite the loans to Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to meet the target
in financial year 2023-24.
● Mission Shakti department had set a target to provide Rs 15,000 crore loan in the financial year.
Key points
● The banks have sanctioned loans amounting to Rs 5,763 crore to 45,046 SHGs by September, achieving 38.43% of
the target.
● While the average loan disbursement to SHGs was Rs 3.81 lakh, the department has planned to increase the amount
to Rs 4 lakh
● Ganjam district topped in the state in achieving 59.47% of loan target, followed by Deogarh with 52.7% and
Mayurbhanj 51.53%.

Govt Restructures Ayurvedic, Homeopathic Service Cadres


Context
● The Odisha government has decided to restructure the Ayurvedic Medical Service and Homeopathic Medical
Service cadres in the state and revise their pay structures.
● The government will create 228 posts of Senior AMO in the pay scale of Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,77,500 under ORSP rules,
2017.
● In addition to the existing 20 posts of District Ayurvedic Medical Officer/ Deputy Superintendents/Superintendents,
15 additional posts of DAMO in the pay scale of Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,77, 500 in the state
● The state government will create one more post of Deputy Director (Ayurveda) in the pay scale of Rs 67,700 to Rs 2,08,
700 in Odisha.

5th Edition Of Eco-Retreat 2023-24
Context
● Eco-Retreat, a popular glamping event in Odisha, is back for its 5th edition, inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen
Patnaik virtually.
● This year's event is bigger, taking place at three new locations—Konark, Sonapur, and Bhitarkanika, in addition
to Putsil, Daringbadi, Hirakud, and Satkosia.

Aim:
● Odisha's Eco Retreats aim to be zero-waste discharge tourism initiatives, strategically located in ecologically
sensitive areas with minimal impact on the environment.

Blackbuck, Nilgai At Sambalpur Zoo


Context
● visitors will have the opportunity to watch blackbuck, nilgai and hog deer at Odisha’s Sambalpur Zoo.
● The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has approved an animal exchange programme between Nandankanan Zoological
Park (NZP) in Odisha and Sambalpur Zoo recently
About Nilgai
● It is also called bluebuck
● It is the largest Asian antelope (family Bovidae).
● The nilgai is indigenous to the Indian subcontinent.
● It is the only one of the four Indian antelopes that is still abundant.
● It is the largest of all Asian antelopes and is one of the most commonly seen wild animals in all of India.
● IUCN Status : Least Concern

Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary


● It is a wildlife sanctuary and a proposed tiger reserve located in the Nuapada district of Odisha, adjoining
Chhattisgarh.
● It has a total area of 600 km2
● The sanctuary harbours a great diversity of wildlife habitats, with a vast plateau, multiple valleys, gorges and magnificent
waterfalls. The sanctuary forms the catchment area of the Jonk River, over which a dam has been constructed to
facilitate irrigation.
● The Indra nullah and Udanti River lies to the south of the sanctuary.
● The important vegetation of the site comprises dry deciduous tropical forest.

Gahirmatha marine sanctuary


Context
● The influx of Olive Ridley sea turtles has marked the commencement of the annual mating rituals in the Gahirmatha
marine sanctuary
● It is recognised as the world’s largest rookery in Kendrapara district.
About Gahirmatha marine sanctuary
● Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary is a marine wildlife sanctuary located in Odisha.
● It extends from Dhamra River mouth in the north to Mahanadi river mouth in the south.
● It is very famous for its nesting beach for olive ridley sea turtles.
● It is one of the world’s most important nesting beaches for turtles.
● This phenomenon is referred to as ‘arribada’.

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary
● It owes its name to the narrow stretch of River Mahanadi i.e. “Sat-Kosh'' or seven miles long near Tikarpada, 60 km
south of Angul.
● The area was made a sanctuary in 1976 and spreads out in four districts of Odisha namely Angul, Budh, Cuttack and
Nayagarh.
● The Satkosia Gorge is a unique feature in geomorphology of India because here Mahanadi cuts right across the Eastern
Ghats and has formed a magnificent gorge.
● Fauna: It is known for Gharials, Mugger crocodile and rare freshwater turtles like Chitra indica and Indian softshell
turtle.

Kotpad Weave At Barbil Art Project


Context
● The sixth edition of the biennial event, Barbil Art Project, was organised at Arya Colony in Barbil of Odisha’s
Keonjhar district
● The Artisans Created Exquisite Work Of Kotpad Weave
Key points
● The theme for this edition’s event was Kata Sarei: Weaving human tapestry with art, a colloquial term used for the
weaving of Kotpad textiles providing an overarching concept for the artists and artisans to adopt for their art projects.
● The project was designed to bring together contemporary and traditional artisans to prepare artworks at Barbil
in collaboration with the local community and develop an understanding of Odishan traditional art as well as create
awareness among the those participating in the event to infuse concepts to create a new meaning to their practice.
● It also aimed at providing access to the community, especially residents of Bolani and Barbil, to witness, participate
and engage with the artisans.

The Barbil Art Project is a collaboration of Utsha Foundation, Bhubaneswar, and Arya Group Foundation, Barbil.

Deomali Peak
● Deomali Peak, with an elevation of about 1,672 m, is the highest peak in the state of Odisha.
● It is situated near Doodhari village, Pottangi Panchayat division which is about 70 km from Koraput via Semiliguda.
● It is surrounded by deep green forest, the peak is rich in flora and fauna.

● This hill range is rich in mineral resources such as bauxite, limestone and gemstones.
● Deomali is dotted with brooks and deep valleys, and inhabited by tribes such Kandhas, Parajas, Bhumia, Malis and

Ganjam tops list in road mishap deaths


Context
● Ganjam district has registered the highest number of road accident deaths in the state this year.
● There has been a sharp rise in road mishap deaths.
● Despite a 13.42 per cent decline in the number of road accidents for the period January to September in comparison
to the same timeframe last year, the deaths have increased by 4.58 per cent.

Ansupa Lake
● It is the largest freshwater lake of Odisha situated in Banki sub-division of Cuttack district.
● The wetland is an oxbow lake formed by River Mahanadi.
● It provides a safe habitat to:
● Three threatened bird species- Rynchops albicollis (EN), Sterna acuticauda (EN) and Sterna aurantia (VU)
● Three threatened fish species- Clarias magur (Clariidae) (EN), Cyprinus carpio (Cyprinidae) (VU) and Wallago attu
(VU).

Paradip Port
Context
Paradip Port achieved yet another 100 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of cargo handling, in shortest time, in its history

About
● Paradip Port is a natural, deep-water port on the East coast of India in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.
● It is situated at confluence of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal.
● The port is administered by the Paradip Port Trust (PPT), an autonomous corporation under the Major Port Trusts Act,
1963 functioning under Ministry of Shipping.

AIPH University plans a detailed study on different types of anaemia in different parts of Odisha, a region with high rates
of underweight, stunting, wasting, and anaemia in children under five.

● Scheduled tribes had the highest prevalence at 73%.

A scientist from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in the state has discovered a new plant species of
‘wild okra’ that can be used for hybridisation to create a better variety having high disease resistance

● A recent study conducted by the state government has found the anemia level among various age groups of people at

● Odisha have taken a huge leap in tackling the nutritional deficiency burden bringing down the overall rate by 17.5 per

Satabhaya, Pentha worst hit by coastal erosion

Kendrapara’s Satabhaya and Pentha sea beaches have experienced the highest level of coastal erosion in Odisha
Key points
● National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences has monitored shoreline
changes in the country and observed that 33.6 per cent of India’s coastline is vulnerable to erosion, while 26.9 per
cent is under accretion and 39.6 per cent is in stable condition.
● With a total erosion of 44,94,576.08 square metre, the Satabhaya beach has lost the most amount of land to sea, while
the Pentha beach has lost a total of 36,45,514.06 square metre.
● Similarly, Aryapalli beach in Ganjam has suffered erosion of 6,76,471.18 square metre and the Golden Beach in Puri
lost 3,78,979.57 square metre.

Context
● Union Power, New and Renewable Energy Minister informed that As many as 24,52,444 households in Odisha have
been electrified under the Centre’s Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and Pradhan Mantri Sahaj

Odisha Sees Decline In Cases Of Crime Against Women In 2022


Context
Odisha saw 24% decrease in cases of crime against women in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to the latest
National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) annual crime report.
Key highlights
● Across India in 2022, the state stood fourth in rate of total crime against women at 103% after Haryana (118.7),
Telangana (117), Rajasthan (115.1).
● Crime against children cases spiralled to 8,240 in 2022 compared to 7,899 in 2021 and 6,330 in 2020.
● There has also been a rise in cases of kidnapping and abduction in Odisha with 5,854 in 2022 compared to 5,625 in
2021 and 4,179 in 2020.
● The state is third in rate of kidnapping and abduction at 12.7%, after Haryana (13) and Assam (12.8)

Odisha witnessed modest improvement in its dismal record on crime against women in 2022, yet the state holds the top
spot in cases related to cyber offences against women registered under the Information Technology Act in the same year.

The latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India’ has revealed

Dropout rate in Odisha

● The highest dropout rate in Class X in 2021-22 was recorded in Odisha, where 49.9% students discontinued their
studies
● Odisha was the worst performing state followed by Bihar at 42.1% and they were among the ten states where dropout
rate was more than the national average, which decreased from 28.4% in 2018-19 to 20.6% in 2021-22.

49.9% in 2021-22.
