Flow of water when servicing water Flow of water when back washing and
regeneration

No. Name No. Name

1 Pebbles 3 Water collecting tube
2 Resin 4 Resin column

Water collecting tube is installed in the center of resin column, that is filled with ion-
exchange resin. Reversing water flow by switching valve, initiates processes that is
required for water softening operation, such
as A. service water, B. back-wash reverse, C. sea water regeneration, D. water washing.
These operations between processes B – D are called `regeneration` in broad sense.
This is process that ion-exchange resin in water softening system collect certain amount
of soft water to reach its saturated point with water hardness, and, by filtering through sea
water, it returns again to original status of absorbing soft water. By repeating this process,
system enables water hardness to be eliminated from raw water, for successful collection
of soft water in long span.

7

5. Pre-installation Check
Check the following points before installation.

1. Water pressure
Make sure to keep water pressure between 0.15-0.49MPa at raw water inlet. Keep sea water pressure
at the same range during regeneration.
2. Draining Water
Prepare appropriate trench for drain water during regeneration process. The following table shows
amount of drain water during regeneration from water softener. To prevent drain pipe from getting back-
pressure, releasing should be done at close range around drain port.

4. Specification
Confirm that Softener type is match to appropriate selection standard. Temperature should be kept at
4 – 40℃ for operation. Do not freeze resins, for frozen resin would not only drop productivity but also
occurs various troubles such as clogging strainers with crushed resins.
If water analysis shows higher than 3 ppm of manganese content, remove those manganese content
before starting water softening operation. Raw water should be transparent, with about pH 7.

NOTE
Open drain piping at the level within 1m below from install floor.
If it is opend over 1m below, resin column can be transformed by water pressure difference.
When there is much level difference between water softener and open position, try cut off piping ; for example
collecting to tank once.

9. Regeneration
The date for regeneration should be decided by the amount of water used per day and water treatment
capability per regeneration.
9.1 Water Treatment Capability per Regeneration
Hardness components, iron and manganese that is contained in raw water should be measured in
order to calculate water treatment capability per regeneration.
The formula is as follows:
G
Qa =
{A+40×(B+C)
}×1.2
Qa Water treatment capability per regeneration (m3)
G Hardness removal mass of water softener (g) (per below table 4)
A Hardness of raw water (by water quality analysis) (ppm)
B Iron substance in raw water (ppm)
C Manganese in raw water (ppm)

MSS-15A MSS-28A MSS-38A MSS-64A MSS-92A

g 675 1,260 1,710 2,880 4,140

(Example)
Given MSS-15A, hardness of raw water as 60 ppm CaCo3 , iron 0.3 ppm, manganese 0.2 ppm, water
treatment capability per regeneration is as follows:

675
Qa = =7m3
{60+40×(0.3+0.2)}×1.2
9.2 Soft water to be used
The formula is as follows:
F: Used soft water per day (ton)
D: Amount of Evaporation from boiler (ton)
F = D × E × H × (1−J) E: Operating hours of boiler (h) *potential load considered
H: Load factor of boiler 1
J: Condensate return rate 1
(Example)
Given Boiler VWH-600 type, 24 hours of operation, load rate 0.85, condensate return rate 0.8
F=0.6×24×0.85×(1-0.8)≒2.45ton/Day

9.3 Date for Regeneration

Regeneration intervals can be calculated by dividing water treatment capability per regeneration with
water used by boiler. *Omit the figures after decimal fractions.
Qa
X=
F
(Example)
Given the above figures for calculation, regeneration is required once every 2 days.
7
X= ≒2.85→2
2.45

18
MARINE WATER SOFTENER

10. Maintenance
10.1 Daily Maintenance
1. Soft Water Check (everyday)
Check soft water everyday to ensure proper operation of water softener with smooth supply of soft water.
Refer to 7-2 for procedures. 13 7-2 Soft Water Check
10.2 Important Caution

Caution
1. Regeneration takes about 1hours and 45minutes and no soft water can be taken during this process.
2. Water quality should always be analyzed whenever pure water is added newly; measured hardness of
raw water should be recorded and incorporated into formula for calculation.
3. Must exchange resins every 4∼6 years. Consult MIURA's service engineer in details.
4. Whenever suspension of particle is found in raw water, Y-shaped strainer should be installed on water
softener.
5. More than 3 ppm of iron (Manganese) contained in raw water, cause troubles. Consult MIURA's service
engineer.
6. Should comply with following rules when you handle ion-exchange resins.
a) Never dry out resins.
Never freeze resins.
The above two points lead to crushing resin.

10.3 Troubleshooting
1. When soft water check, water has not been softened.
(Cause 1)
Raw water may not have gone through resin column, but by-passing partially.
(Solution)
a.Adjust either control valve or outlet/inlet valves to its appropriate position.
b.Check By-pass valve and exchange it if necessary.
(Cause 2)
Hardness removed mass may have reached saturation point. Water treatment capability may have
exceeded set amount.
(Solution)
a.Try regeneration process.
(Cause 3)
Regeneration has not completed satisfactorily; for example, 1. time for sea water regeneration process
is short. or 2. Sea water pressure is low.
(Solution)
a.Time should be measured as it is assigned.
b.Keep sea water pressure as it is designated.
2. Collected soft water drops down too extremely.
(Cause 1)
Water quality of raw water has been changed; especially when iron increases.
(Solution)
Use "Aires" , resins washer.
Consult MIURA's service engineer in details.

19
MARINE WATER SOFTENER

11. Exchange of Ion-exchange Resin

(Hereinafter, referred as ‘resin’ for ion-exchange resin)
11-1. Necessity for Exchange of Resin
Resin can be used for many times through repeated process for a long time; however, it has lifetime. This
is because they are gone through repeated collection and regeneration process, after many contraction
and expansion, and being exposed to iron, manganese, temperature, and oxidizing free chlorine.
Lifetime may differ according to how softener is used; however, annual examination should be conducted
to add 10-15% of new resin against total volume or exchange part of them. All the resin should be
exchanged with new ones, every 4 –6 years.

11.2 Procedure for Exchange Resins

Only resin can be exchanged.
